What kind of animal? Where located?
For small burrows like chippies dry sand flows like water. Under foundations concrete is a possibility.

What about groundhog holes under stumps?
Rip rap or smaller gravel?

I use a lot of Quickrete especilly for armadillos under the foundation. It is fairly cheap ...some times I buy the broken bags at Lowes for next to nothing.
