Ants. - 07/30/14 03:19 PM

I'm trying to trap coons around chufa patches and my dp traps are full of ants every morning. By afternoon the ants have cleaned most of my bait out or else they have a nest built in the trap. What do I need to do?

My only idea is to bait with shelled corn instead of fish and marshmallows.

I'm also planning to set some coyote traps this week and think I'll have the same problems with ants at them. Any suggestions?

Use peanuts or pecans also.

When using bait, place Vaseline to where the ant has to go through it to get to bait. Works on a baited stick, with Vaseline on stick or on a wire the ant has to climb down to get to bait.

Put Vaseline on DP so ant has to crawl up it to get to bait. Should stop ants unless it gets too hot and melts away. Put sets in shade, you probably will do that anyway.

Thanks Mr. Kirk! I'll definitely try it tomorrow.

Yeah Kirk, that is a great tip. On the bright side, our technician who does the majority of our ant work is probably making a lot

more stops. ( And hopefully a lot more money ) The ants in southern Wisconsin have been as thick as I've every seen them. Which is a

good thing: It seems everything starts with the insect world and moves on up from there.

In the past, I have hung Lil Griz upside down from branches etc, so the trap is about 2' off the ground, so the coon can set in relative comfort. Need to check early and use a really sticky sweet bait so it don't fall/run out. I have also used poly-P to hold bait up there.

Also cures mouse problems.

Hey Big Bob, as long as I've got you on the line, I've got to tell you: I took a two foot snake that was completely trapped on a glue

board and placed him in a bucket with some Crisco vegetable oil. I wanted to see if he could remove himself and he did it! He was in

just as good a shape as his hand caught buddy when I released the both of them. Just thought you oughta know.

Thanks, I know you can regularly do that, I was just giving that guy a heads up that it's possible to kill them accidently, as he stated he wanted live release.

Try spraying that home defense stuff on the DP. The only problem though, and a big one at that, is if that smell scares the coons too. But if it doesn't, you won't have any more ants,

Haven't tried it but I've often considered putting down a few handfuls of bifen granules around sets in the summertime.
