Deer exclusion!

Deer exclusion! - 06/29/14 01:32 AM

On my own dam garden!

That's a 3D fence with the inner starting at 6' with poly wire at 6', 5', 4' and 3'. The outer is 3' from the inner with wires at 3', 2' and 1'.

Unfortunately I can only cover two sides, the back and one side, but three sides are fenced with the other side having a shared four foot chain link. The neighbor on that side has his entire lot fenced so I'm somewhat covered in that direction. The open end opens onto my backyard which is fenced, four foot chain link to the house.
Not a complete exclusion but the major vulnerabilities and known access points are covered.

Got it mostly done today. Will finish the ground tomorrow and plug it up. I will have the wire baited when I do.

I just might add this to my portfolio of services.

Nice David! We've done 3 bids for folks with muleys in their gardens, usually the garden doesn't
end up valued as high as they thought when the management option becomes clear, but it has been
a good exercise for us and we use powered fences for a variety of things including porcupines.

In the right situations, I believe there are some serious markets for a variety of these deterrent systems
including bear, deer, predators of all kinds, porcupines, etc... Out here many areas I have are so dry we
don't have to worry about vegetation and grounding out the system the way folks in grassy wet regions do,
nice pics!

Justin, I expect good results as the deer pressure is rather low. I have one adult doe that is a regular in the area but she's pretty bold. Just need to get her zapped hard a few times.

Is it true that each and every deer that comes along needs to be shocked ( sometimes more than once ) before they learn to stay away from the wires?

Low pressure always a good thing! smile

Have you ever tried the "taster" things they sell to get deer, bear and other wildlife to get a good hit the first time up to the fence?
Two of the major deer fence companies I researched gear from a year or so back sell all of those things...

A link for reference, I looked since our soils tend to be light and fluffy and getting a good strong hit can be tough with deer and bear,
I think even I'd stop eating chicken wings if I got zapped in the mouth! (And I really really love chicken wings!)

Gunpowder and lead work wonders around here. wink

Gunpowder and lead are great during the legal season.

Right?

Love the taste of venison myself, but not the kind that gets the local CO on my porch...,

Its called a permit and they the cos will issue you one here for crop damage.

Crop damage permits aren't usually for the backyard garden are they?I've seen plants for orchards and major ag, very seldom for the small outfits...

Depends on the state I suppose, saying "gunpowder and lead" you realize though sounds like you are simply stating you shoot them not that you apply for and wait for a permit from your states G&F.

Just a point of clarity...

The general principle here is whether or not the agricultural enterprise is commercial to any degree. I don't recall the threshold dollar amount of revenue, 3k I think, and you are agribusiness and qualify for sales tax exemptions and depredation permits.
