Salamanders - 04/14/14 10:34 PM

Just received a call about Salamanders invading someone's garage. Does anyone have any Idea how to st up a an exclusion for these critters?

That's a unique one! Do they keep fire wood
In there garage by chance or mulch? A lot of it
Probably has to do with the habitat in the garage

Get rid of the moisture problem. The reason they squirm so much in your hand is your hand is pulling moisture off their skin and it's uncomfortable to them.

Do you know of any way to set up a barrier so they bypass the garage. I thing they are stoping in the garage on there way to a near by pond. there must be something they don't like to cross like pepper of a line of Lime or something. if i can find a substance they don't care to be near i could set up a barrier that they would not cross.

I don't know of anything in particular, but since they like moist skin, a line of table salt might work.

Let me give it a try... Couldn't hurt

Why not try a rubber door gasket or something made for sealing the door to the floor and walls.

The salt could act like it does on leeches and kill them if enough quantity.

A physical barrier would block them and they are readily available at any hardware store.

I use them for snake calls, salamanders shouldn't be much different.

Paul, if you don't find your recipe my mother in law has one, it starts out like this.

Double, double toil and trouble
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble

They were probably sleeping when that book was assigned in high school if they don't get it.

I beg your pardon. I'm the one who taught that young whippersnapper how to write!

Migration to spring breeding habitat (ponds & vernal pools) will be over quickly (usually move on 1 or 2 wet nights) after that it's pretty slow to non existant.
Might suggest washing down the area they are entering. Not sure how much of the movement is based on scent. Serious regulations on most species of Sallies.

The salamanders have been on the move for a week or two says the client. I am relocating them from the garage to a near by pond (100 feet away) and I have sealed the doors. Hope it keeps them out.
