New Pigeon Exclusion Product... - 03/25/14 05:56 PM

On an inspection this morning in a neighborhood where just about every house has either visible spike or
some form of pigeon deterrent including some of the shock track products.

Taking some pics for the prospective client and I see on a neighboring house that where they are missing spike that has
fallen off, they have bonded aluminum foil to the ledges?

I've seen carpet tack strips used, people who made their own spike strip with nails in boards and of course lots of CD's plastic
owls and streamers, but haven't ever seen aluminum foil molded to ledges till today.

At least I hope the homeowner did that themselves! smile

I just took a job at a small town Hardware store.

Their critter control aisle consists of a spear type Mole trap (we don't have moles) Plastic owls, plastic bird spikes. And about
every type of animal repellent under the sun. The only halfway functional item they had there was a Victor easy set gopher trap.
Didn't even have the over priced Duke #1 longsprings that everyone seems to sell.

They also rent out what appears to be a coon size havahart cage. I have a mental image of somebody trying to figure out how to deal with a skunk in
that thing. It aint gonna hold a coon.

We have the same nonsense with mole traps and deterrents here (we don't have moles in this part of the state either).

I think of the plastic owl as a cry for help! On the serious end though they are a sign folks have a problem that is 99% of
the time unresolved, so worth a knock...

The big box stores all carry the spike, plastic mostly, the owls, mole and gopher traps and a nice complement of snake away,
bat away, critter away (aka napthalene).

The trap rental is one we have an interesting thing with in our area. You can rent them from the city animal control, however funny
enough they often aren't available to come when mr or ms. skunk is in the trap....

I get more calls from folks who called them first and are looking for someone to bail them out now that they've caught the skunk and
the best part is how indignant folks get when told it will actually cost them to have you come out.

Setting up our annual Power Plant bird job this week on the towers. Pigeons and Starlings are the target.

I guess I can save some time and money by just getting some aluminum foil and wrapping it around some strategic areas and that should do the job. I wont need to set any of the typical large capacity pigeon traps and nest box traps as is our usual procedure. grin

Seen it here in AZ...
I did a exclusion Saturday that the tile roof was repaired by using a coke can, split and unrolled to extend the metal flashing.

Hey Vinke,

We'll have to talk tile roofs and pigeons sometime, my first tile roof experience was here when we launched and I've seen some crazy things done to evict birds off of them.

What I really like is when folks (usually local Pest companies) drill holes through the ridge tiles so they can put hardware through the tile, no caulking or sealing of any kind and of course since most homeowners won't go on their own tile roof, they don't see it till the water starts coming down.

Personally I love flex track for the ridge lines if folks are willing to spend on a solid system, they see the birds gone the same day it is installed and with our 24/7 sun, the solar systems really shine.

See lots of sticky foot and hot foot and other names as well, which of course never looks like it should, always looks like black tar streaks. There are a few places where you can see the damage from this from google earth! smile

Bob - Just think of the cost savings by switching to foil! smile

...then of course there's Avitrol!(see pigeon trap thread) PCO's seem to love that stuff...till they wind up on the 9 o'clock news cuz they didn't follow label instructions...
I'll bet there are more PCO's quitting their attempts at WC work because of bad Avitrol results than any other product.

Re: New Pigeon Exclusion Product... - 03/28/14 12:06 AM

Dave you said it!! When they stopped selling that I thought maybe it would slow down a bit, but I've heard that most of the supply companies that sell pesticides and things like avicide have enough massive containers of it to last several more decades!

We've had quite a few of those news reports as well including some folks who went after pigeons and instead got crows..... (downtown).

Have done inspections where folks of course were trying their own hand at this or they had previously had pest controllers doing avicide. Open water dish on the top of a roof in country where any bird under the sun (including but not limited to hawks, owls, eagles, song birds, etc....) could have ingested it...

I've had referrals actually from multiple PCOs who have stopped doing the bird work or were frustrated with attempting to use avicide or trap and wanted someone to help their clients who wouldn't poach their typical work (mice, spiders, ants, etc...). I've found they love finding a wildlife only company they can partner with and I'm glad to send them all the work they desire in the other realm when I get those calls or have clients ask me for referrals to PCO's.

Since I actually started our company by catching probably more than a thousand pigeons in our county, does that make me the "Old Pigeon Exclusion Product?"
