Coons in Attic....Advice Please.

I rarely get a Coon in the attic call and would welcome advice on this one. They are in the attic of a 3 unit 2 story triplex. The 3 attic areas are separate although the vinyl soffit is continuous between the units. At 3 corners of the building there are pieces of soffit missing and these appear to be the only access points.

My initial attic inspection was limited to one unit. There was plenty of sign up there but I was unable to locate the coons although she had heard them up there just before I arrived. There are numerous places next to impossible to get to so I have no doubt they were up there.

My plan would have been to mount positive set double door Comstock traps over the holes but it seemed that it would be difficult to mount them due to flimsy vinyl siding and soffit.

What I ended up doing is sealing one of the holes and placing baited traps as near as possible to the remaining two entries. Advice welcomed!

You may end up building it out to do a positive set if its trap shy.

That is what I was thinking. It is do-able but I'm hoping to get by without having to build up something to support a heavy trap.....not much money in this job but I felt like I needed the experience.

Another question is how do I know there is or isn't young in the attic unless I get a visual?

I just got 2 coon out of an attic last week. Baited cages near access. House was a wreck really couldn't mount a trap outside due to wood rot and accessibility. No young born yet there.

Can't comment on young there yet, but I have not seen them here.

Can you put traps outside on ground or is it too high a traffic area?

I have used bucket sets in attics several times. I bring a burlap sack to haul out the catch

Checked the traps that I placed on the roof yesterday and had 2 mature coons in custody this morning. I'm guessing that will be all but will leave a trap by the remaining access hole for another day or two to be sure. I have sealed 2 of the 3 holes.

Male female? both young males ? Both young females? young male female?

Mature male and female. They were some of the most docile 'coons I've dealt with.

Are you still in breeding? that is interesting to me, in my area mature females (2 years and older) this time of year are not with males, matter fact, they are real close to dropping and some may have. the only male females I get this time of year are last years coon, for me, may be a late breeding on these younger coon, this maybe where we see those late born pups. you got me thinking, never gave much thought to why on those young male/females pairs in March and April.

Another question for you, is there sign of a long term den site there where a few coon are coming to the site or is does it appear to be very few coon at this spot?

That is difficult to answer as I only have access to 1/3 of the attic as it is a triplex with 3 different owners. However, coons would have access to all units via soffitt. In the unit that called me it appears to be a fairly new infestation with few coons. Only a handful of droppings.
