columbian ground squirrels - 07/15/12 09:35 PM

ok im a groundskeeper at the local hospital. my lawns are getting more and more of these squirrels punching holes in my lawn. i have been trying 110s at the tunnel holes but they just seem to go around them no matter how well i blend in the traps. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know absolutely nothing about trapping Columbian Ground Squirrels, other than what I can find through a GOOGLE search. Here are a few results from the search.

A COMPARISON OF THREE TRAPS FOR REMOVAL OF COLUMBIAN GROUND SQUIRRELS-- http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/viewco...irrel%20trap%22

After reading these documents, I believe that I would use single door cage traps baited with various seeds. Most rodents like oil sunflower seeds. I might even make a couple of these. Of course, you can order them.

Again, I have never attempted to trap them; just making a stab in the dark.

I have Richardsons ground squirrels here but they are easily caught in #55s or those small round body grips WCS sells. 110s should work fine if that is what you have. Maybe you need to put those fine wires between the the trigger wires so they can't slip past. I have a friend in western Montana that does Columbians and all he uses are small body grips and tube traps. I also sent him one of 330trappers ground squirrel cages and he said it worked like a charm, he caught four at once while still setting the job up. Try and look up Lee's Trapworks out of Canada, they make a metal stamped spring loaded trap with a guillotine kill bar that's very effective. Also consider burrow fumigation, I can fumigate an infested 5 acre field in a day and get 95-100% kill, of course you have to be licensed to use fumigants.
