Chicken thief - 06/15/12 01:36 AM

Alright guys this is at my own house.

What animal would steal 10 chickens from this kennel?

No feathers, no digging, there is a bottom to the kennel, and only sign is a broke off wing to one chicken.

Gotta go with coondog on this one, sounds like a hungry neighbor, can't see even a weasel getting it done
without blood and feathers!

A neighbor is my thought also, only have 1 neighbor so it kind of narrows it down

If you left the cage locked, and it was locked when you got back, it can only be a person, neighbor or transient.

Re: Chicken thief - 06/17/12 07:21 AM

I had three 6-week old chicks disappear from a similar set up.
I suspect it was the neighbor. My sister in law reported seeing someone about my size (so a kid or teen girl) in my back yard when she drove by she thought it was me at the time since her focus was on driving -- except i wasnt home that afternoon. I added padlocks after that.

I have had cats fish very small chicks out through the wires without a trace, but they were much smaller chicks to be able to fit through there whole.

I've had a dog break out of one of those crates. The weak point is the corners where the sides come together. I put hogrings on all the corner edges after that, but then loaned out my cage and never got it back....again, human culprits.

I'm going with humans also but I think not the neighbor. Unless you two have been quarreling about the chickens and he just strongly thinks you should not have them. Someone familiar with your yard, property, chicken set up. Definetely not a friend but an aquaintance possibly a friend of a friend or a friend of your neighbor.
Your wife if she wasn't a chicken fan could have hired a chick man to relocate. The kids, grand kids or kids visiting the neighbor attempted to play with them but they escaped. If that happened I think they would be hanging around the pen.
Unless I knew more though I wouldn't settle on the neighbor. It will make it hard to live there.

Keep that cam up and taking video or photos. You will catch who or what in action soon enough.

Be sure to place your trail cam in a non obvious location.

I'd vote for human as well. Otherwise the chickens would put up enough of a fight there would at least be feathers around.

Unless it was Sasquatch, then it wouldn't technically be a human.
