Another hawley norton question. - 06/23/21 01:10 AM

According to the book I have hawley norton's were made up until 1927 but I just got these that look a lot newer than that.

Pan looks a bit over sized and I noted that the jaws are connected different from the copied Newhouse design for their #1 trap? But I am not an expert

I’ve personally had that trap many times. They also come in a size 0. I’ve read or heard Hawley Norton’s where dropped from the oc line up as early as 1917 with maybe a few made after that but up here in Canada I’ve been told they kept selling them into 1945-7.
I’ve also been told all Hawley Norton’s had cast jaws but as you can see your trap has pressed steel jaws. This is an atc feature and I believe your trap was made after 1925 by atc in Niagara Falls Ontario. Notice your trap has no onieda or onieda community on it. I’ve seen many 3 and 4 sized Hawley Norton’s that had animal trap co stamped on the bottom of the pans all of them Canadian traps.

The Niagara specials are almost identical to the trap you have there. They are built very simular. Also made by atc in Canada for the Canadian market. I’ve searched for Canadian trapping paper to see who was selling what and when but it’s not easy to find that stuff the information has been elusive.

Off topic but since you mentioned Niagara special have you ever seen a stop loss model.

I don’t believe there was ever such a trap, the stoploss part is just an add on. It can be added to any trap it’s fits on. They where sold separate.

From what I've found I dont think its original either. But all the add ons I've seen have been a clamp on this one is riveted and welded. Still a cool find.
