Steel stretcher - 10/04/16 01:44 PM

Can someone help me out with information on this stretcher?

This was a flea market find this weekend. I also got a #2 longspring Sure Grip in good condition from the same guy.

Thank you!

Your stretcher appears to be one made by the original Animal Trap Company of Abingdon, Il. These items were made during the early 1900s and were sold through most of the fur buying houses for many years. I have World War I era fur company catalog from the Lincoln Hide & Fur Company, Lincoln, Nebraska that has these stretchers listed. The No. 1 muskrat stretcher sold for 25 cents each or $2.50 per dozen. No. 2 mink and no. 3 skunk were each 35 cents each or $3.00 per dozen. No. 4 fox stretcher sold for 55 cents or $5.50 per dozen. The No. 5 wolf stretcher was listed at 75 cents each -- $7.50 per dozen.

I paid $10 for it at a flea market having no idea of the value but thought it would be worth that as a wall hanger on my wall. I'm guessing this is the skunk size?

They had a smaller one but looked like someone had soaked it in vinegar and was in rough shape even though it was shiny.

$10.00 is not bad for something that will fit nicely into a trap collection. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Oneida Community distributed the stretchers, and later on took over control the the original Animal Trap Company.
