Stop Thief - 12/30/15 05:58 PM

I understand that some are marked with the size and some are not. I have three and haven't found a size. Where are they normally marked at?

Also, how or where do you get the measurement to determine the size?

Thanks!

Stopthief traps made by Oneida Community are marked on the kill bar or the wide end of the trap. O.C. only made them in 4 sizes, #1, 2, 3 and 3 1/2. Traps made before and after O.C. by A.T.C and A.T.C. of America, do not have size marked on them. There is a #0 and #4 and #5, these are not marked. #1 is 8" long, #2 is 10", #3 is 11" and #3 1/2 is 14" long.

I believe the #5 was made by someone else as they are all weak and would not hold anything in my opinion

If I'm measuring correctly, I guess that I have a #2, #3, and #3.5.

To get the correct size, you need to measure across the top of the trap, opposite of the arch.

Here are the sizes, w-measurements. Since the traps were hand-made, lengths can vary by a quarter inch or so ...

Size - Length
#0 - 6 1/2"
#1 - 7 3/4"
#2 - 9 3/4"
#3 - 11"
#3.5 - 14"
#4 - 19"
#5 - 22"

I was told about a guy that showed up to a convention with a trunk load of # 5 stop theifs as selling them for $ 5.00 each.It was 30 or so years ago, they tell me that they were like new,and he would only sell one per collector. He had another rare trap too, just can't recall what that was.Someone else may remember this guy.Bruce

I have never seen or read during research that a number five was made by ATC.The only sizes that I remember was 1,2,3,31/2,and 4.and four sizes prior with the Hooker Pat.I think they wasn't stamping until maybe 1906 .I could be wrong it's been awhile.

Here is a #0 Stop Thief. Oneida Community, as far as I know only made the Stop Thief in 4 sizes, #1,2,3 and 3 1/2.

I wonder if the # 5 traps were made from mild steel instead of spring steel. They tell me they are very weak.

It'd be hard to mistake that for another size. Neat looking, little trap.
