Wisconsin trap tags - 07/16/15 09:37 PM

My Dad got a bucket full of longsprings from a older trapper recently, and came into a pile of WI trap tags. I was wondering if anyone could share some information about them, as far as what to look for condition wise and value.

Thanks ahead.

I don't know anything about them, but they seem to enhance trap prices on ebay.

Wisconsin required use of dated tags on each trap from the 1923 through the 1972-73 seasons. Each year a trapper had to purchase a tag for each trap he intended to use from the county treasurer(during the years I purchased them I paid 10 cents per tag and I think that was the price for the entire 50-year-long period). Value of tags generally is related to the age and rarity of the tag and earlier tags are generally more expensive than later. The earlier tags were made of brass and had interesting shapes. Later tags were made of steel or aluminum and were squares or rectangles. As tag collecting advanced, collectors discovered that in a few years some tags were manufactured that were different from the majority made that year(made of copper rather than brass or with the year stamped crosswise rather than lengthwise on the tag)and these rarities were valued more highly than the more common tags made those years. When I collected and sold tags, the tag for 1932 was difficult to obtain as few were sold during the depth of the depression.

As far as condition and specific current values, I will leave those topics to someone with more current knowledge.
