Info on Newhouse 2 1/2 and Victor 1 please - 02/07/15 09:16 PM

Mainly interested in the age of these. I know the 2 1/2 is an otter trap missing the breast plate and I can't see a stamp on the spring. Could that mean its a replacement spring? Is the number 1 a cast jaw? Can't read much more than 1 on the pan. How old are they?

I can answer the part about the spring. Some Newhouse traps didn't have stamped springs but your spring is not original to the trap because of the bottom spring eye design.
Can be seen in your first pic.
Nice trap to have though!

Your #2 1/2 is in nice condition, however, like Digger said, the spring has been replaced. The spring on your trap should have a small hole for the bottom eye, and should be stamped. That spring has a large eye on the bottom and probably is a Victor spring. Your trap does not have a pat. date on the pan, which would be "Dec. 16,'02." So, your trap was made before 1902. The 1902 pat. was on single spring traps because it was for the jaw ends were they hook in to the frame on the opposite end from the spring, the jaws are riveted to the jaw post on that end and on double spring Newhouse. The #2 1/2 was first made in 1882 but the early ones had riveted teeth and a different pan with a lip edge to hold the breast plate rather than the oval holes. The pan design was changed some time in the 1890's.

The Victor is an Oneida Community because the cross is riveted to the base, Animal Trap Comp. spot welded there's. So, it was made before they sold out the trap business to Animal Trap Comp. in 1925. And it has a "V" cut in the pan, they started doing that in 1910. If your trap has pat. dates on the pan it could narrow it down a little closer.

It is hard to tell if your #1 Victor has cast jaws from the photo, I would need to see a photo of the trap not set so you can see the top of the jaws.

I had a 1882 made 2 1/2 NH. The patent was stamped on the
bottom of the base at the non-spring end. The only NH I've ever seen stamped like that. Mine had no pan,
so I let it go.

I have a #2 1/2 with the pat. date on the bottom and I also have a #3 Newhouse clutch trap (#23) with "patented Jan'y 12 1886" stamped on the bottom.
