Oneida Bear Trap - 11/26/14 06:44 PM

I know nothing about bear traps but often thought about purchasing one as a novelty piece. I have an opportunity to buy this one, but have no idea what it's worth? Doesn't look very old, but I'm just wondering what some of you would be willing to pay for it??

Thanks for your help.

What is the asking price for this trap ?
It will probably be easier for the Bear trap collectors to answer your question if they know the price that is wanted

The asking price is 500 but I didn't know enough to look for the stamps.

If it has stamps and they're nice and clean,,,, what might the value be?

If it has hardly able to see stamping, what might the value be?

No stamping at all value?

Thanks for the help.

That trap looks to be in fairly good condition, no heavy pitting. It is a Newhouse, Oneida Community, no paten date model. This model is one of the more common Newhouse bear traps and was made between 1893 and 1911. The springs should be stamped but may not be readable, they would say: "S. Newhouse, Oneida Community, N.Y.", in 3 lines on the top of the spring. In my opinion this trap would be worth about $600 give or take depending on how bad the buyer wants it.
