Could this be a slickpan?

Got this #4 base and jaws and not sure if its a slick pan or the letters are just wore off.

On your second photo down I see what looks like embossed letters. It almost looks like a M and E. Could it be part of Rome? If it is, you have a really rare trap. Greg

If that's what it was the rest was under the spring eye and wore off. Does it look to be a slickpan?

I have only seen 4 #4 sized Newhouse traps with Rome out of all the thousands of traps that I've looked at, and all of those were in collections, including the two that are in mine. I have seen many more bear traps with Rome on them. Some of these only have one or two letters of Rome. Most collectors believe the Rome stands for where the metal foundry was in Rome, NY. The metal would be cut in lengths, and it didn't matter where they would cut the metal. Thusly, sometimes the metal would be cut with only R showing or Ro, or Rom. I believe your trap was most likely an early #4 that would have been a stamped pan. The stamping could have been real light and not visible now. YEP, Your E looks just like the one on mine. Must be what it is. Are your springs machined with the old style stamp. This trap came with 1 spring and the swivel was connected to the base. Was going to put forged springs on it if it was a slickpan but maybe better leave it as is. Here's the way I got it.

The springs are the old style machined type. The chain is the heavy cast eight and it takes of from the spring. Greg
