31 1/2 Newhouse

31 1/2 Newhouse - 09/13/14 03:03 PM

Here is a photo of a #31 1/2 Newhouse. The 31 1/2 Newhouse is the exact size of a 3 1/2 Newhouse. The only difference is the 31 1/2 has no teeth and is harder to find than most 3 1/2 traps. This trap is the large pan variation. The link that connects the chain to the ring is unusual. I've been told that this link is found on Canadian Newhouse traps occasionally.

I remember back in the late 70s, there was an old trapper in central Idaho that had one of those traps. Said it was the best beaver trap there ever was. And he was still using on his trap line. Not sure what they were selling for back them, but it took a dozen 330s to talk him into giving up that trap!! 12 times the beaver catching ability and he was still reluctant to part with his 31 1/2 Newhouse......LOL

Nancy, My trap came out of Idaho. I got mine from a collector and if I remember right he had found six of these traps.

Hi Greg, Here is another one of the 6. Bought this from a collector who got it from Shorty and Virginia. I think you told me one time that they were at that show and also bought one of the 6 he had. Although they supposedly never made #31 & 1/2 Canadian, this is as close as you will ever come to one with that Canadian Link.

Bruce,
On The last model #31 & 1/2 they were using up the rest of the pans, and putting them on #3 & 1/2s but the jaws had teeth. It was a regular #3 & 1/2 with a #31 & 1/2 Pan. The 1s were dotted out or squiggled out, to try and obliterate the 1.
