Whenever you think that you are having a bad day carving your way through snow & ice to get that last empty trap checked, count your blessings and be happy. It could be a lot worse.

Make a living for a lifetime on the open water or killing tall timber and even a fulltime trapline feels like a vacation!
Thank you,Mira

They do it to make a living and some actually like the rumble of the ocean and the inherent risks. A case of "I'm alive doing something that most folks are to scared to do." I'm a more "Thank you God ,this is a really good day to be listening to the quiet of my trap line," Kinda guy.

Deadliest Catch....one of my favorite shows, it's on discovery channel. Only thing is I need to take a gravol even to watch it. Can't even imagine being on one of those boats on the Bearing Sea. Sticking with my sled on the trap line me thinks. smile

Reminds me of my old Navy days. I used to be stationed on board a frigate, USS Taylor (FFG-50). That ship was bigger at 450' long, but we had some rough days at sea. I was never the type to get ill from the motion, but when you're out there, the view is only a small part of it. We were in seas with 20+ foot waves, when we would put the forecastle (front end of the ship) completely into the water, the sound was incredible! We could hear metal groaning, the whole ship would begin to shutter and shake. You could all the ladders all the way down clanking back and forth as the ship shook pushing it way back up out of the water. That metal groaning though was something to hear though, just a deep deep groan that would go through the whole ship. Then of course the side to side motion, great way to get your "sea legs"!

Thank you much for sharing Mira! Sometimes I miss the ol days, although I don't think my body could handle shipboard life anymore.

We came back from Viet Nam on the USS Trippoli(sp?) a converted helicopter carrier. Hit one typhoon dead on an the edge of another. Stayed sea sick for several days and walked like a drunk once on dry land for a couple days...ah the good ole days that never were. LOL
