DOMESTIC TERRORISTS in this post 9-11 world should go to prison, not

to Tybee Island.

Unfortunately, a federal judge in Michigan has a warped view of crime

and punishment, and Coastal Georgia residents must keep their guards

up as a result.

On Wednesday, Tybee officials were understandably shocked to learned

that Frank Ambrose, 33, who admitted that he set a fire that caused

more than $1 million in damage at Michigan State University, won't be

headed to a federal penitentiary.

Instead, the Detroit man will first spend a week at a Tybee beach

house, rented by his parents.

Gee, did the judge order him to use sun block, too? Talk about kicking

sand in the public's face.

Apparently, a judge bought the idea, planted byAmbrose's attorney in a

court filing, that Ambrose deserved time "in a relaxed vacation

setting" before the arsonist was sentenced Sept. 22.

That's outrageous. With permissive jurists like that on the bench,

federal and local law enforcement officials have to work twice as hard

to protect Americans from terrorists who wish them harm.

Ambrose is looking at five years behind bars for his role in a 1999

fire at Michigan State. But that's not all the damage he allegedly

caused.

In a plea agreement with prosecutors, he admitted roles in a dozen

acts of property destruction in Michigan and Indiana. No wonder Tybee

officials are spooked, and you can't blame them.

Ambrose apparently earned a cushy vacation on the coast by cutting a

deal. He has something investigators want: Information.

He's alleged to have connections with the Earth Liberation Front, a

notorious group of violent, enviro-wingnuts. In return for spilling

the beans, he gets to frolic in the surf.

It's good that Ambrose is helping the feds squeeze these whackjobs. He

deserves some consideration.

But if his family wants to get together near the water before he gets

locked up, what's wrong with Lake Michigan?

Let's hope the FBI keeps a close watch on his comings and goings at

Tybee, and especially keeps him away from matches.

Meanwhile, if a federal judge in Georgia ever suffers an extreme lapse

in judgment and wants to send a homegrown terrorist on a special side

trip, we hear Kalamazoo is a lovely place.

I am sure he will disappear and be sweep out to sea. Or at least that is what the story they will tell is going to be.
