Game Council says feral shooting 'a success'

The New South Wales Game Council says more than 11,000 feral animals have been killed in state forests since hunting on public land began two years ago.

Game Council head Brian Boyle says native animals have been helped by the removal of thousands of feral rabbits, goats, pigs and foxes.

"There is a net benefit to the environment because you're removing these animals that target native animals, that remove vegetation, that impact on the environment," he said.

"Some of these include the worst pests, such as feral pigs, foxes and rabbits and by removing them we take the pressure off native animals."

But the NSW National Parks Association says it remains unconvinced of the benefits of the cull.

The association's executive officer Andrew Cox says there is no way of telling if the feral animal cull has benefited the environment.

"But are we getting the proper conservation gains that are going to benefit threatened species across the state in the most important areas?," he said.

The New South Wales Government first allowed hunters onto public land two years ago.

Even if it doesn't directly benefit the native wildlife (which I'm sure it will), those animals just don't belong there to begin with. If you exterminate them, you haven't lost anything.

The problem I see is this. Where ever such things happen there is a natural enemy available that is being undermined by ARA. HUMANS can be the natural enemy of every animal on this planet if NEED be but quite often our hands are tied by people claiming that we are doing the wrong thing by culling animals when in fact the only right thing to do is cull. By the same token we can be any species best friend and protector if the need arises and we can change as balance is attained.

Removal of feral animals is a good idea. It's been proven countless of times in who knows how many ecosystems. It's the reason a job existed for me in Hawaii.

Feral cats and dogs gotta eat and what they eat is of no concern to animal rights people because they could care less about animals or ecosystems. It is only their own feeling of superiority that they concern themselves with in their pursuit of Sainthood by condemning all animal killers and eaters as being less worthy then their evolution to a higher more compassionate plateau even though that platform causes more cruel deaths in nature such as starvation , contagion and death by suffering to tooth & claw shredding of flesh .
