Only 5% of 130 million Japanese eat whale meat. - 07/02/10 11:15 PM

The author makes it sound like such an insignificant number of people who eat whale meat. 5% of 130 million people is a rather good market to corner for any harvest. Whales will be harvested & folks will utilize the meat, oil or any portion of whale despite the protests. I can agree with that as long as conservation is practiced and the whole carcass is utilized.

Sea Shepherd's Watson on Interpol's wanted list

Interpol has placed the head of anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd, Paul
Watson, on its international wanted list.

The request to place him on the list was issued by Japan.

Interpol has issued a so-called blue notice, asking national police
forces to pass on information about Mr Watson's whereabouts and
activities.

But it has not issued a notice requesting his arrest.

The Sea Shepherd leader has harassed the Japanese whaling fleet for
the past few years, limiting the number of whales caught for so-called
scientific research.

Mr Watson, who is in the United States, says the notice does not make any sense.

"It's a blue notice which means it's not an arrest warrant, it's just
so they can keep tabs on me. But they needn't have wasted their time,
they could have just followed our website," he said.

"One thing that it does mean to me is that we're certainly getting to
them. We cut their kill quotas in half and they're really desperate
that we not go back down there this year.

"But I can tell them we'll certainly be back down in the Southern
Ocean harassing them again in December."

Despite international condemnation, Japan hunts whales under a
loophole in a global moratorium.

Fewer than 5 per cent of Japanese admit to even eating whale meat.

New Zealand anti-whaling activist Peter Bethune appeared in a Tokyo
court last month on five charges related to his boarding of a Japanese
whaling ship in the Antarctic earlier this year.

Bethune has been charged with trespass, vandalism, obstructing
commercial activity, being armed with a weapon and, most seriously,
assault causing injury.

The assault charge stems from allegations Bethune threw tubs of rancid
butter onto one of the whaling ships and in the process slightly
injured a Japanese crewman.

He pleaded guilty to four of the charges but denied the assault.

If convicted he faces up to 15 years in jail.

The charges arose after Bethune tried to make a citizen's arrest on
the whaling ship's captain and was also trying to serve him with a
multi-million-dollar damage bill.

Meanwhile, Greenland's indigenous peoples have won the right to hunt
27 humpback whales, capping three years of acrimonious debate within
the 88-nation International Whaling Commission (IWC).

The self-ruled Danish territory can now kill and consume nine of the
giant marine mammals each year through 2012, with its existing quota
of more than 200 minke and fin whales cut by the same number.

The decision - greeted with applause - came on the closing day of the
IWC's annual meeting in Agadir, Morocco, where a big-tent compromise
deal between pro- and anti-whaling nations collapsed earlier in the
week.

I've never even thought about eating a whale, but by God, if Paul Watson's against it, it must be a good thing. Someone please send me some whale meat!!

Whale is cheap in Japan, my brother lives there. He sent me some in a can similar to a tuna can. It was BLACK and tasted like teriyaki(sp)? jerky!

Had some the other day. Wasn't my cup of tea, but I try it when the situation arrises to just say I did. I can tell you from what I've seen from the whales harvest around Nome (noteable on St. Lawrence Island) that the ENTIRE whale is utilized. I was impressed with how little was left of the carcass on a few whales I was able to see up on the "butchering beach".

I guess these Highway crews learned a valuable lesson. Lazyness might be the mother of invention but invention such as this, lead to way more work for the lazy. grin

There might not be too many eating it, but they use a lot of whale oil.

I don't want the meat, gimme some of that ambergris!
Some of the perfumes found in eastern europe will make you intoxicated and float you off your feet. I believe it's oil and ambergris used to make them. If it can drive a person wild, think of how attractive it could be to canines perhaps? laugh

ambergris=whale puke. Sea shepard is a pirate vessel that should be sunk as soon as possible.

The guys a joke. I watch Whale wars and I have yet to see him stop them from harvesting any whales. In most cases The japanese send our decoy ships and keep Watson busy while they take care of buisness.

Ambergris is usually passed in the fecal matter. Ambergris that forms a mass too large to exit via the anus is expelled via the mouth, leading to the reputation of ambergris as primarily coming from whale vomit.[1]
Sorry,either poo or puke.lol
The synthetic version is what is used in trapping lures. It has always been too expensive to use the real thing in lures.Maybe there is someone out there using it but the lure is not going to be 4.50 an ounce if they are..

Hello Tsarevna.

Your comment reminded me of a debate I had with some ara persons quite upset about selling deer & fox urine in the hunting sections of wal-mart and other box stores. They were having a rave match about how only vulgar hunters could put fox or deer urine on their boots or pants to mask human scents. They got real ticked off when I made a point of pointing out women regard Whale Vomit as one of the best ways of masking their scent by putting it on their wrists & behind their ears. A few were too stunned to know that many of the highest priced perfumes are derivatives of animal scents.
