It's a wrap

Designers reinvent fur for fall

The story of fur for the past decade or so has been one of innovation and reinvention. Furs are now knitted, sheared, beaded, inset with patterns, imprinted and come in coats, hats, wraps and other objects of many colours. Of course, there were some traditional pieces on display at the recent NAFFEM (North American Fur and Fashion Exposition) trade show in Montreal, with about 100 exhibitors showing 200 fashion collections to about 3,000 visitors.

At Montreal's Natural Furs, for example, U.S. designer Prabal Gurung created croc-print-lasered sheared mink jackets and argyle capes. Zuki, Montreal's king of sheared, embellished beaver, had shoe and bear patterns in his colourful coats, along with horses -- a favourite at the Kentucky Derby, he said.

"We don't do basic, because everyone else makes basic,'' said Betty Balaila, Zuki's wife.

Sunny Fong, the Toronto winner of Project Runway Canada last year, showed a fitted camel suit trimmed with fox at the fashion runway gala, titled Jazz de Luxe, while Izma -- by Adrian Mainella, Fashion File's former host, and Izzy Cammilleri -- showed a dramatic black fox shoulder bolero.

The SEAL collection by Bente Houmann Andersen featured a massive bag of sealskin, as well as looped seal jacket with a beautifully blousoned back. A blue seal jumpsuit was definitely a runway piece.

Gliagias of New York showed a bleached two-tone sheared mink coat with elbow-length sleeves of elegance fit for a screen goddess.

As always, designers from Kopenhagen Fur of Denmark, the largest mink auction house in the world, had ultra-cool garments, including a sweeping grey coat with grey mink border, black cross mink headdress (again for a screen goddess) and tulip-shaped jacket, and for the runway, mink sarouel pants.
