Squirrel for a bait base?

As long as Ive trapped, made bait and squirrel hunted Ive never tried squirrel as a bait base.. Anyone ever tried it? I mean grey/red squirrel?

I did once... caught this guy in a tire set baited with a squirrel.

I have and it has worked pretty well for me. Usually I'll save all the parts I don't want when I'm squirrel hunting (hide, head, tail, bloodshot parts, even organs). Then what I like to do is take parts, put them in a grocery bag, roll up tight, and then freeze, almost like a big cigar. Then when I'm punching bait holes I can tuck them in snugly, usually still frozen. I've caught a lot of foxes, yotes, and some bobcats this way. I will say though I have tried experiments with just guts and that seems to be pretty hot for the coons and grinners so if you aren't trying to catch them I would either omit them or stick to heart and lungs. I don't use it as a base though, just the straght squirrel itself. And I'm also trapping in KY. Hope that helps!

I chunked up a dozen or so old squirrels back in October and made xed with Dunlap’s bait solution. I plan on trying it for this year for coyotes and bobcat.

Squirrels have a unique smell and bobcats know them well. I have had luck using the head, hides and tails. All in one piece, for cats as much for eye appeal as anything. If you skin them by cutting across the base of tail and pull skin off all the way to head and cut it off they look very good tacked to a tree along a travelway. You can make a traditional loose cubby or I just prefer a walk through. Don’t stake at the base of a tree.

Fresh squirrel, even ground squirrel, makes a great bait for all predators.
