Squeeze or just let dry hanging? If squeezed can juice be used for lure/bait?

Fresh squeezed has a different smell than dried/semi dried. I use both but usually don't use fresh unless I'm out of my normal stuff

I use fresh since It's more natural.

I agree with using fresh if you're after beaver. For other critters that like castor I think anything is probably OK. Fact is, I often squeeze out castor right after I pull the beaver into the boat and add theirs to my jug of liquid castor. Liquid castor taints after some days and turns a dark color.. Does not work well then.

My best beaver lure is fresh castors turned inside out and a pair or two left in the bottom of a 1 gallon jar with some oil from the oil stones drizzelled over them then sealed up and aged like that at least 5 years.I keep 5 big jars of them with a couple pair of castors in each and each year take the oldest ones out and put a couple new ones in to age.
The castors turn pure black and rubbery and are deadly for lure.A small crumb smells like a whole warehouse full of fresh castor.

I learned how to make that from old Pa Turner.

Any special reason why you use a 1 gallon jar for a couple pair of castors and a little sac oil?

Has to be lots of air for them to turn rubbery.

I'm assuming you like it to be usable in small pieces as opposed to pasty?

Glass or plastic jars?

Do you keep the jars in a controlled environment or is it ok if they freeze outside over winter?

I use to make a lot of lure and bait with castor and I always dried mine and ground it up.. I liked the texture and volume I got that way.. Trust me, the critters like it just fine ground

When I was in Minnesota, I saw where a trapper cut a beaver castor into small pieces and laid it on the bank, with a trap set in in front of it in shallow water.
