Newbie Results from VA - 01/02/24 08:39 PM

I figured that I've stalked around here long enough and thought maybe it was time to start contributing instead of just viewing.

I bought property in SE Virginia 5 years back and saw pretty early on that I needed to do something to maintain the rabbit, turkey and quail populations. I don't have many folks in the area who trap, so I decided last year that I needed to learn how to do it. I really want to thank y'all for the free exchange of information and knowledge on this site. I started with 6 traps this past January and caught 4 coyotes and a bobcat over 4 weeks on 170 acres.

Moving on to this season. These pics are the results of the past 2.5 weeks. All caught on baited dirthole sets. Once again, a big thank you to many on here for sharing your knowledge so that I can get different perspectives on what works.

Appreciate the kind words gentlemen.

Pulled another Coyote this morning. I can really see how this can get addicting.

Quail and turkey managers will list these in order for successful populations:
Coon
Possums
Skunks
Cats
Fox
Coyotes

That’s about all we have down here besides hogs. Hogs don’t exactly prey on the birds or eggs, but destroy the habitat.
Taking those bobcats alone have already helped maintain and will future increase your small game population.

Outstanding work! Keep at it!!

You're already addicted, it's too late.

Wanna Be, we are on the same page. I just bought a dozen dog proofs to start chipping away at the nest raiders. I planned on dry cat food mixed with crawfish oil as a bait. I know there are hunderds of opinions for baits, but I'm hopeful this works out. I'm seeing multiple coons each time I deer hunt along the swamp at the back of my property and have seen them actually pull crawfish out of the water.
