I’ve never used many 1.5s but I hear nothing but good things about both the mb450 and the noBS

Bridgers have been pretty good. New ones come with a decent night latched dog. For coon I would maybe buy some with double jaws if I was going to buy more 1.5s

I don't use many 1.5 either. I would say if you are strictly after fox or coon you would be fine with any make of trap. I use a good selection in Victor, Northwoods, even Duke for coon, mink or rats. Other than that its #2 or 3' s for this guy.

Cant go wrong with either I like the cast jaws on the MB 450's,both are really strong traps.

Montgomery 1.5 round jaw step-ins. You'll have to find used ones but they are excellent fox traps. (assuming since you are from PA that is what you're targeting) You can then have them modified with a nice chain set up and laminated jaws if you want. They are tough traps that will hold any incidental coyotes as well.

Depends what you are trapping. For muskrats - Duke.

Duke makes a great well built and super strong 1 1/2 coil spring.

Just a general question like to see what everyone thinks an uses

MB 450's are my favorite for fox

Re: 1.5 coilsprings - 08/16/23 04:37 PM

Totally subjective and depends what you doing with them. I prefer the easy to set victor or B&L for the mink line. You can set traps all day long and not have wore out hands. The KO traps are a premium duke on steroids and the coon guys really like them but strong as heck. As far as dry land or Fox trapping it would be tough to top the mb 450. Super high quality and built like a brick shouse. Just my opinion of course.

I bought 6 dozen Dukes from Mark Steck several years ago because he gave me a good price. When dad passed, I kept a few dozen of his Victors, all he would buy. I dont know if it’s because they were dad’s and im sentimental or if it is because dad could level and night latch better than me….or maybe the victors are just a superior trap….but when I reach into the bucket to grab a couple to walk down the bank and set, Im happier how it sets and beds when it’s a victor. I did put some music springs on them because theyve been used a lot of seasons and were starting to weaken.

Whatever's the cheapest. I like the dukes but they require more attention out of the box. I also like the bridgers because of the night latch they have. Overall, I would choose Bridger for an out of the box and go set trap. But dukes have always been good to me as well. I'm just as likely to grab a bridger out of the bucket as a duke as I have them set up close to the same. But the trap that I really like is the 1.5 Victor pinch pan from the 70s/80s.

They're pretty good when you get them setup properly

Re: 1.5 coilsprings - 08/20/23 08:15 PM

I use dukes only problem I've had was a pullout from the chain getting stuck on the back 4 coil post (traps were 2 springs) it had multiple swivels but still haven't found a way to remedy this. Also this was an otter never had a problem with coon or nutria

Break off the pins and no more issues

Was planning on chopping them just wasn't sure if it would weaken the trap. Sounds like what I need to do

Just need to leave enough past the end of the frame so levers don't pop off. You can just shorten em to the end of the cross peice and be done with it.

I think Larry Karels prefers that trap. He catches A LOT of coyotes in iowa.
