Best trapping rig?? - 11/14/19 04:50 AM

What are you using to run your trap line??? Im a rancher so i drive daily in a 2012 chevy 2500, fuel mileage is bad at best. Looking for a another rig to run line that is more efficient/4wd/heater.. No UTVs have one, plus there more expensive than a used vehicle that comes with doors and heater that are not add ons. Just curious on what everyone is driving?

I have tried just about most sized/models. I always seem to come back to the old Toyotas. I ran my first one for 15 years exclusively as a trapping/hunting rig. I just bought the same year truck (1992) last year after trying Dodge, Chevy, Fords in various sizes. The courthouse was about to have me get a dealer's license because I couldn't find one I liked. They aren't pretty but they get me everywhere I need to be and they are the most reliable truck I've found..

I've had ford f150s, dodge dakotas, and gmc sierras. Also trapped many years out of trunk of a Toyota tercel and one season used a Saturn car trunk.
The little green Toyota tercel won when it came to fuel efficiency, upper 20w and 30s with the manual tranny. You could fit a surprisingly high amount of beaver and coyotes in that trunk too, seriously
For a park on road and walk in trapper like me, it worked very well until the winter hit full on of course.
For best overall so far it's been my Sierra though. Avg 21-22 highway, hauls a lot of stuff, crew cab fits me and my boys well, and it's got a lot of extras like heated seats, touch screen, all the mlb Sirius stations, and a bed light. I did put new all terrains on it last year and that was huge after the crappy winter we had here. Kept us in game trapping for sure.
I know, an f150 would have been same. Just had a bad taste in my mouth after the last two and their tranny issues. Lots of room in those ford super crews though for sure, and a slight taller, deeper bed too. Seemed like my stuff fit better under the tonneau on the fords than they do on this sierra.
Had a buddy that ran tundras and he went back to GMs said tundra fuel mpg was awful and he didn't like some of the features. Others have had great experiences with them especially the smaller tacomas.
I've also known a lot of diehard dodge folks that get a lot of life out of their rams.
Whatever you decide on, follow the recommended maintenance, do a little homework on stuff you want/need the rig to do for your lifestyle, and best of luck!

87 Toyota pickup 30in mud terrains good mileage and I've only ever been stuck once in it and it had junk wore down tires and I had to get the shovel out. since putting the mud terrains on it I have had great luck and it is small light and the heater works great. if you can take a utv type somewhere you can take these Toyotas they aint much bigger and a heck of a lot cheaper. I also liked when I trapped outta a 99 jeep grand Cherokee I just had a huge Rubbermaid tote in the back to put catches in and those things have great 4wd. im allowed to drive through all the land I trap very rarely are we farther than 50 yards from the truck. by far I like the Toyota the best. my next one will be a 99 to 2003 Tacoma with the electric rear locker and an extended cab. or the same years in a 4runner. I take the kids a lot that's the one thing I liked about the jeep could take 4 kids comfortably. but for durability you can beat a Toyota, if I could get my hands on a samurai I would surely try that as well those things are tough.

When setting heavy I use the 95 Toyota 4runner, when checking or light setting it is the 95 sonic hatchback with the rear seats removed. Neither are pretty, but they have never failed me. That little sonic with the front wheel drive will astound you at where all it can go!

I run my line in my daily driver which is a 2013 Ram 1500, extended cab, 4wd with stock everything. It isn't pretty, but frankly I haven't found a ranch road, 2 track, or FS Road it doesn't handle like a dream. And it's good on the highway. Gas mileage could be better, but it's not terrible.
I built an organizer for the bed to keep an assortment of buckets and bons from sliding around to much.
At some point in gonna put a better front and rear bumper and a headache each on it, but I'm pretty darn happy with it!

My favorite rig was a '97 Toyota Landcruiser. I took out all the seats after the front two, cut a stall mat to fit the back, put insulation under the inside body panels, and covered everything I could in bed liner. Warm, versatile, and could go anywhere.

The Toyota’s are hard to beat. But please stop spreading the word, it only makes them harder to obtain.

I prefer to spend my hard earned trapping dollars on gas for my f250 crew cab with a V-10 on 37's. It is a great trapping rig just don't get too far from the gas station. lol. I do run a Yamaha Rhino for the land i trap around my home. Looking to get tracks for it for next year to run in the deep snow up in the mountains

Small truck of some sort. I have Mitsubishi mighty max, and I can just about reach all the way across the bed. Most new trucks, even the 150/1500s, you practically need a ladder to reach anything in the bed, they're way too tall.

Mighty Max is a great little rig for sure. I had a V6 in the past.

2000 Isuzu Rodeo. Hitch hauler on back for critters and bait buckets, etc. Have rear seats folded down for more room. When putting out sets I just roll down the back windows and grab what I need.

About the same size as my Ranger Crew 800 plus it's street legal with heat and air. This, early model 4 runners and Jeep Cherokees make great rigs.

Gas mileage could be better, about 14-15 mpg. But I'm running 32" mud grips with a 2" lift.

I don’t have a “trapping rig” just my daily driver. 2016 ram 1500. No complaints, except that I wish the bed were bigger

I got this out of the scrap yard. (Auto salvage yard) also got a great set of snow tires a front drive shaft and a front caliper. All out of the yard. I worked for the guy for 10 hours in trade for all. It is a 2005 Jeep liberty and it goes through everything I need to.

I have an 03' s-10 with a 2.2L motor im liking alot these days. Its a 2wd, but got it for 1500 w 130k miles on it. It doesnt snow much here or get muddy, just gets cold. It sure gets good gas mileage. It doesnt go very fast, in fact yesterday the wind was blowing 40 and I couldnt make it go into, over 60 mph..........hehehe.........the heater works though.

I have a '99 suburban 2500 4wd with a 5.7 for the bad weather, its a tank. We call it 'The tank'.

I drove one of those for a while and it would indeed go a lot of places. I think if I was running a cat only line where I wasn't in and out of the back end I could make one of those work rather well. I've toyed with the idea of making one my full-time trapping rig. You can get them for super cheap here. I just don't know chasing coyotes how much fun it would be in and out all the time.

Re: Best trapping rig?? - 11/15/19 11:45 AM

I run my 2015 Tacoma it goes where needed and has all the heat you would ever need. I would prefer a 94 extra cab over the 15 double cab just for the better gearing and a bit smaller. But I wouldn't be able to trap some of the places I do efficiently with a truck trailer and a utv or quad.

I have used a Yukon for past 2 rigs. Before that Daewoo nubria hated the car but 35 mpg and free made it well worth it.
