Hello,
What are y'alls favorite earth anchors?
What do y'all think about MB Super Stakes, Wolf Fangs, and Duck Bills?
Thank you,
AuthorTrapper.

I switched over to Wolf Creek Super Fang, same thing as the original wolf fang but they are wider. They use the same driver. They worked great this past season with the never ending mud. I normally use duckbills, which I love, but I am going to transition to all Super Fangs next season.

I will say that the duckbills hold well, but in rocky ground you can figure on drivers failing. I got a good heat treated driver and that helps, but it still isnt as forgiving as a good heavy duty wolf fang driver.

Super stakes are my favorite. The wolf fang drivers haven’t held up well for me.

Standard berkshires for me. When I want to pull a trap, I just cut the cable and move on.
Just makes things quicker, and easier on my back than pulling them. Lol

Pogos.

Easy to make and they hold.

MB super stakes with chain and welded S hooks; working exceptionally well for me the past half dozen years.

Iowas were my standard for many, many years here. The ends were harder to find lately. I like those when I can find them or I like super stakes.
Berks even the heavy duty just dont work well late season around here even with a pilot hole they slip off end of the driver frequently. I've tried bending up the ends, everything. They are inexpensive but not practical for what I need them to do around here in December and January conditions.
This off season I'm going to try to make some simple Iowa versions with no nut welded on them just holes near top center for cable to slip through with a stopper button. I can get black pipe or conduit in lengths cheap and make a whole bunch of them. I have drivers from 1990s that I still use and have never failed on my coyote line.

I make my own out of sickle sections.

Wolf Fangs work well for me, it's the drivers I have had bad luck with. I'm gonna pony up the money for a good one this year.

Pogos. 15" cable. Cut and run on pull day. Cheap to make.

Chained super stakes for most, cross stake rerod with JC's chestnut for rock and heavy gravel.

Re: Favorite earth anchors? - 03/17/19 02:09 PM

I use 12” super stakes with 3 links of chain at the top so I don’t have trouble with the cable sticking up.

Pogo has worked well for me

Like wolf fang stakes. Going to make a new driver though before next season. Metal isn't hard enough to use as a driver. IMO

I agree the metal on the wolf fang is not hard enough to drive them in some this country without a pilot hole.
So I tend to reach for a super stake alot of times.

Make my own out of black pipe with 16" of cable. Used them past two years on dp's and footholds.

Pogos, I buy the washers at our farm store in boxes of 100. I get them in 1", 1¼", 1½" and 2". I make up different stakes by washer size and cable length. I build from 1" on 10" of cable for sod, to 2" washer on 24" of cable for soft ground. My standard stake is 1¼" washer on 16" cable. Never had one pulled.

Wolf fangs, just spend the money on a good driver...

Re: Favorite earth anchors? - 05/10/19 02:08 AM

I make mine with Wolf fang anchors on a combination cable/chain. I use 12 inches of cable and 6 inches of chain. Then if I have trouble getting it in all the way I don't have a section of cable sticking up in the trap bed.

Re: Favorite earth anchors? - 05/14/19 09:02 PM

As with everything, the answer is “it depends”. Where I trap, I can push a wolf fang to the end of my 36” driver by hand. Where my buddy Paloduro traps, he has to deal with rocky terrain, so a very durable, slim profile anchor like a superstake is what he prefers. They become a heavy duty alternative that can withstand the force of being driven through tough soils much better than what I use.

Whatever a person decides will work best for their needs, a durable, quality driver is highly recommended.

Good luck

We have some pretty boney soil conditions around here and it's hard to drive anything into the ground without hitting rock. The MB Super Stakes hold up very well. Haven't blunted a tip on one yet.

Re: Favorite earth anchors? - 05/19/19 03:32 PM

I’ve been through nearly all of the anchors out there at some point. I’ve always said that whatever anchor you can get away with using, and reusing, at the best price, is the way to go. By “get away with” I mean the tolerance the soil has for you. Some anchors won’t make it 4” because of frost or rocks. Other soils like clay and gumbo can bend certain anchors. Further, some ground won’t give anchors back without a fight or without bending them.

I’ve had the pleasure of trapping 11 states mostly because the Marines have moved me so often. I’ve found I was changing anchors often enough because of it. Now that I’m Montana bound again I’ll move back to the super stake with chain. Anything less can be shredded during the heat of winter.

I like regular super stakes or cable off to a tree.

Re: Favorite earth anchors? - 05/20/19 12:28 PM

I have tried a lot of the earth anchoring systems. Berkshires I found would bend about 50% of the time will trying to remove them from the ground. Duck bills were excellent the only downfall to them was the driver that comes with them. Wolf fangs are very good (my personal favorite) hold strong and unlike the berkshires they wont bend in my experience when removing them from the ground. Pogos I tried but to no fault of there own I personally just didnt like them on dry land but I did like them for water trapping. And super stakes are also excellent but I wouldn't put them above a duck bill or any of the others. So in all honesty they all work and it is really kind of a personal preference, kind of like different kinds of traps... they all work but some guys get used to a certain type so they will only talk good things about them. The choice is yours and you wont go wrong with any of the staking systems on the market.
