Best bobcat states? - 04/23/18 01:07 AM

What are the best bobcat states for nonresident trappers?

Thanks

Re: Best bobcat states? - 04/23/18 02:22 AM

Probably Wyoming.

I think Nevada and Montana - both good bobcat states - are resident only.

Mississippi and South Carolina. You can't hardly keep cats out of your sets.
Non resident friendly and no limits and shirt sleeve trapping.
Hides aren't of much value but If you want numbers those are the places to go.

I never caught a cat In my life and went to MS and caught 44 In month. I trapped In SC for 15 years and I lost count of the cats I caught.
Probably most of the south Is like that.

Not Wisconsin...there's public land, BUT it takes forever to get a tag it seems.

Beav, that's some big numbers down south. Didn't you have to contend with snakes though.

Nevada seems to be up on the list.

The snakes aint what folks make em out to be down here. Beav is right there is a ton of cats down here. Not many are gonna be thrown in the select pile though.

Kansas can be pretty good.

If your home state doesn't allow you to trap cats , Wyoming won't either.. crazy

Depends if your talking quantity or quality. Oh and by the way Kansas sucks for cats, Nebraska is much better. Lol

northwest Texas.

I think the cat game is about over. I say they'll become a specialty high fashion item with demand considerably lower than supply.

Re: Best bobcat states? - 04/24/18 04:19 AM

That will likely depend on your definition of best.

My definition would be above average quality, good quantity, and plenty of available ground via public land and/or road right of way trapping. The available ground in good cat territory is probably the most important aspect for out of state trapping, at least for me.

I don't know the answer based on my definition.

I would tend to lean towards Wyoming but without having put boots on the ground up there that is just speculation.

ive trapped cats in wy. jan and feb in cat country is most definitely winter. big remote country also. don't leave to set or check without the stuff you need to stay out for several days in bad weather. you don't often see other people in good weather. bring stuff for beakdowns or getting stuck. help is not real likely. people are very friendly you just may not see any

Haha, there are spots in Nebraska are pretty good but overall not close to the numbers in Kansas.

Yea but there has to be a happy medium somewhere. Good access to decent cats in decent quantities. Access and quality being the most important factors.

Spot on Danny; I've lived in Wy for eighteen years and believe me when I say the Rocky Mountains will kill you if you don't know what you are doing. Dec an Jan
can be flannel long sleeve and long johns
one day and thirty below with thirty mph gusting to fifty winds and fifty below wind chill the next. If your equipment is schetchy or lacking best stay in town. I had to walk out seven miles on the GPS in eight below cause my wheeler wouldn't start. My fault. Lucky the wind was calm
about 9-10 lol and the pickup did start.
If you do decide to visit be careful and bring plenty of gas money to get home.
As was posted before Wy. Is reciprocal If your state won't let me trap cat's as a nr
Wy. won't let you trap them here.

That ain’t no lie... I’ve gotten to where I hate bobcats almost as much as possums... They constantly plug up good coyote sets, even out in wide open pastures where there is no apparent reason for a cat to even be there...

If a guy wants to bust his butt and I mean bust it hard, you can whack high numbers in SC or GA. Even parts of NC. But the quality is going to be about 1/10th of the quality of a Montana/Nevada cat.

Re: Best bobcat states? - 05/12/18 09:05 PM

I have trapped Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona and West Texas over my life. As far as the amount of cats, price for the pelts availability of trapping land and getting permission New Mexico is my pick more specifically Northern New Mexico. Texas is private and permission can be so, so and same for fur quality lots of cats. Montana and Wyoming have some great cats a lot of public land that is trapped hard. Montana and Wyoming can be real hard to access to on private and Montana has a quota on cats. Wyoming public lands get hit real hard and Montana is closed to non resident for cat. Arizona is closed to trapping on public lands and has a fair number of cats of varied quality. Colorado is a cage state with pretty good numbers and overall decent cats. Never trapped Nevada and it is closed to non residents from what I have seen they have the best cats over all percentage wise. Nevada save Alaska has the most public land but travailing across it your going to cover a lot of land to catch a good number of cats.

So the question Is. Does he want numbers or quality?

Re: Best bobcat states? - 05/13/18 06:09 PM

All of the above.

Re: Best bobcat states? - 05/13/18 06:56 PM

If you live In the area maybe. But If your coming from out of state no way can you do both. You don't have the time and don't know the lay out.

I didn't think anyone knew NEW Mexico was a state, I actually read a reply to this thread that mentioned AZ, and TX. you'd think they bordered eachother

Re: Best bobcat states? - 05/29/18 02:42 AM

Finally, somebody said it. I'm not in northern NM, but central with an elevation of 6600 feet and can get some good cats here, and no limit. Nonresident tags are kinda high, but I'm not sure what they are in other states. And if you're a nonresident your state has to allow nonresident trapping. Lots of private land around the place I'm on, but I have enough country to keep me busy. Most everyone around here wants, or needs some trapping work done, anytime of the year especially on coyotes, you just have to be willing to ask. But cat season is November to March. Used to be a lot of sheep in this country and you had to work on the predators. Now I have one neighbor out of 7 with sheep, and I have some.
