Beaver Tail Oil on YOUR Trapline

Does it play a role on your trapline?



How often are you using it in some form or fashion?

I see no reason to use It.

I use BTO in some of my dirtholes.

There is other oil I prefer over tail oil.

I made some up last summer and tried it in dirt holes this season, oftentimes paired with non commercial meat baits. It got a lot of attention from coyotes and a few fox. I will be making some more up. This one was caught in a dirt hole baited with a piece of fresh chicken and some beaver tail oil. Three coyotes worked the set in 6 days.

what oil do you like.

Never got a good enough response for me to continue to use.

Tried it alone in dirthole and flat sets just to see what kind of reactions it got. If they even stopped to smell it was brief. I like major digging at dirthole so and like lots of movement of the feet at flat sets. It just didn't satisfy me.

There is a guy down in souther oklahoma that swears by bto. I made some just like he said with a few drops of skunk in it and it just dont work as well for me. Now i made a lure with bto and caster as the base with a few other oils in there and i get a decent response from coyotes and coon. Last year i made the same lure with shell fish oil as a base insted of bto, not as good for the k9s but did catch a lot of coon and 2 cats.

It's looking like BTO isn't something I should bother with....

For cats I mix a few teaspoons BTO and glycerine in my squirt bottle of urine. Kind of a go-to combo on my line. Really hangs at the set in cold wet weather and seems to "pop" the urine scent too. As mentioned above, another good cat lure is to mix a few drops of skunk in with some BTO.

Doesn't come from beaver. Although,I like certain parts of a beaver but when comparing animal oils,there is one I like better.

Well to me It just seems like a lot of work rendering down this BTO. If you want something that will get a good response at any set just strip out most of the oil from the sacs. Then leave the partially empty oil sacs out till they get a slight taint. Then your good to go.

Fascinating how certain odors work in parts of this continent and other areas they don't.

Ground beaver tails that have been making black oil for months is my go-to coyote bait. If they miss the pan the hole will be dug out.

I also use the bto as a bait solution in just about anything...deer meat, beaver meat, etc. Any oil mixes well with it. Also add skunk essence.....and it is a great change up.

Not hard to make. Cut or grind tails in early spring...put in 5 gallon bucket with lid....place in old freezer that no longer works....check it at end of summer. I have gallons of the stuff. It is a staple on my trapline.

What's its normal color? Black or tan/semi clear color?

Looks like cane syrup to me...very dark...almost black.

Smells like catfish stink bait to me. I like it before the temps get below freezing. Anything that eats meat will dig it out here.

Did they work it or did you catch them????

I caught one at that location. On the second night after I made the set I had a coyote pull out of the trap after digging at the hole.




Two nights after I made the catch. On the sixth night it got down to 5 degrees and the remake was worked again. The coyote stepped all over the trap but the jaws were frozen in.

Looks like they wanted it from the intense digging reaction......use peatmoss, waxed dirt , drydirt with salt then you will have more skinning to do. Thank you for the response.

I'd bet it was the chicken that got the reaction. Gets the same reaction here. They will dig craters for it.

Ground beaver tails that have been sitting thru summer and making oil will make them dig.

The oil can be mixed with a meat of your choice as a bait solution.

BTO or ground beaver tails making oil need no preservative. It is self preserving.

Add a touch of skunk or any other oils for a super change up.

BTO and ground beaver tails is one of my main coyote baits and lure ingredient.

Put some ground beaver tail that is making oil in front of a domestic dog and watch what he does.

It is and more than likely will always be my go to lure i have been putting it to the test for the last three years make two sets 10 feet apart use well knowm lures in one just bto in the other out performed every one so far but one.But that was a bait.Ive always used it in flat set hole with a stake driver pour in teaspoon amount, and ive put it up against some good lures, the best combination I have found was foxcream and bto. Made numerous first nite catches, I will go back to some of my old sets after season and the yotes will still be digging at the hole 2 months later. They dig at it hard enough a lot of times the hole will be their the next season ready for a trap and a new hole&bto. The smell is hard to describe mix between sac oil and castor with a smokey under tone.Any time I draw any out of my rendering jug the smell clings to your clothing,soon as I walk in the door my dogs start drewling and whining and my wife starts cussing

and I honestly don't believe they want it in their mouth as much as they do on them the new cologne for yotes i've always put it in a hole put a few drips on log backing and usualy find it feet away from set. Wish I had some trail cams that didn't flash I would get to the bottom of their obsession, It also works for juicing up a scent post

Do you just grind and let them sit and render? In the sun or shed? Any other additions during the aging?

bto will work on numerous animals and all predators. Some guys catch beaver and otters using it lol I never have but that's not saying it wont work. It's got a strong musk smell unlike any thing but to me it smells very similar to gator oil. I suspect it is a strong curiosity smell to other fur bearers

I chunk the tails so they will grind easier. Its good that I have a friend with a very, very large grinder. I put the ground tails in vented 5 gallon buckets and then put the buckets in an old chest freezer. Fill the buckets only about 2/3 full to allow room for the oil. Needs to sit through a hot summer.

Neighborhood dogs have stole two pint containers of this out of my truck over the years. They did not bother any of the other baits, lures or urines that were there. They crushed the plastic containers, ate all the BT bait and licked the container clean...

yep wolf that has happened to me as well! Had it happen at a farmers house one day during season the farmer appologized over and over! I saw it roll in some I laughed and told him you wont be sorry later. I had a neighbors cat knock a jar over trying to rub all over it! Thank heaven it was on a short shelf and landed on a soft patch of grass. Honestly ive yet to find a animal that's not a little bit interested in getting a snout full. Even livestock act mesmerized by it. Al her sense of smell is shot so im safe but she can detect skunk!!!!

...with an electric carving knife as shown...slice to bone about 1" apart from the sides, then slice down the bone--red line-- so chunks fall right into the bucket.
Venting isn't needed and leave in sun all summer.

after running a batch, the chunks and bone work GREAT in dirtholes, just like the oil.

For the doubters, I think about 10 of the testimonials on my website are catches with BTO.

I've found this thread a good read! I think it was last week someone was talking about yote trapping and he said he wouldn't go yote trapping without a bottle of BTO.

I had no idea what BTO was until I was on F&T's website and BTO was for sale. Since I was ordering anyway I had them send a bottle of it. And at $5 a bottle thats pretty cheap lure compared to some of the lures I ordered.

Can't wait to give it a try next season.

I’ve had good luck with Bto on the pipe set and the compass set. That being said I’ve had good luck with back breaker and a lure I made with rotted sacks too. I would have to say the coyotes in this part of the country like beaver and beaver parts,lol !
