Montgomery dogless traps - 04/26/15 11:51 PM

Anybody use these?I'm looking over the differen dogless traps available. Was thinking of their #2s for my yote/fox line.I like pan size. How is the spring strength?Thinking 2 coil is fine if springs are strong and last. How are they built in comparison with bridgers or montana traps.Trying to make a good choice without buying one of each for a side by side comparison.Just want opinions from guys who use them
thanks

Like the #3 and #4 a lot. Great feet ,zero losses . plenty strong two coiled for my needs.

Can't speak for the #2s. But I love the #3s. I'm up to about 12 dozen of them. Check with Andy W. About the 2s. I'm pretty sure he was running a bunch and I'm sure If he did, they saw plenty of critters

Everyone I talked to didn't have issue. Boils down to personal preference. I am a square jaw guy but wouldn't hesitate to run these if no other option.

I would get the #3s

The #2's work fine but a little hard on the feet.

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/27/15 05:38 PM

I bought some from yoteguts that he had modified and wish he would have sold me more. they are good traps. yoteguts does a great job on modifying traps, when you get them they are ready to set. Thanks for a great job yote. Rod

Were these traps modified? Laminated and swiveled well. Im talk 1/4 or 3/16 lam.

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/27/15 07:24 PM

The 3s look like the same shape/size as my dukes 3s.Why are the 2s hard on their feet?No problems with getting pan tension set??

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/27/15 07:25 PM

Now you have me leaning towards 3s.Do you guys use wire screen for pan covers??

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/27/15 07:28 PM

Yes same as the Duke 3's . No problem getting pan tension set..just file on the dog.

Your dukes look like victors you mean. These traps are just dog less victors. The 3s and 4s are the same and the #2 montys are dogless 1.75 victors .

I havent used screen yet will try some this year. I think pan tension is way over rated so I can't answer that. I just set them. Some out of the box, some waxed, some dyed. Feet are bottomed out on the pan most of the time

I was thinking the same thing. Only thing that's confuses me is the JCC baseplates for the #3 Monty are different than those for a #3 Victor.

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/27/15 08:16 PM

I've used the #3 Vic FOJ (with lams) as a trap for either/or fox-yote set. No problems on the feet- Which was why i suggested the #3 (FOJ)

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/27/15 08:21 PM

Stock trap 2 coiled no mods and added 1 swivel.
Posted By: coon grease

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/27/15 08:40 PM

Live trap, he probably has them listed for the old Montgomery's . If you wanted to buy JC baseplates or lams the corresponding victor sizes would work.

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/27/15 09:15 PM

Replaced #2 Montgomery jaws with a #2 Victor jaws, fit was better than the original Monty's came with.
Posted By: newtraps

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/27/15 09:21 PM

The new #2 Monty's are going to be difficult to base plate as the frame is embossed down the center with a center link loop which is too small for my liking.A J hook won't fit through the center loop.I made a sterling type swivel.
Posted By: Doug66

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/28/15 12:57 AM

I used a couple dozen of the Vic/Montgomery #2's last year. After I modified them to my liking they put quite a few coyotes, fox and cats in my truck.

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/28/15 01:50 AM

did you just hammer the tab down when you baseplated them doug? how did they treat the fox?
Posted By: yoteguts

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/28/15 04:14 AM

Thanks for the kind words Rod. Keep killing those yotes.
Most of the yotes I caught had there toes still touching the pan. The pan sets so low in the trap the foot is way in there before the trap fires.

Posted By: coon grease

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/28/15 12:53 PM

I've had the same results as guts has. That foot is almost always still touchinv the pan.

Posted By: Doug66

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/28/15 02:53 PM

Joe I used a flap disk on a grinder to get that off. Ground it flat and then put my baseplate on. Worked just fine on gray fox.

Couple of coyotes in the #2

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/30/15 01:21 AM

did you trim the pan down for length? looks like they are in the pic.
Posted By: yoteguts

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/30/15 01:25 AM

They use the same pan on the #2,3 and 4. When I did my #2's I trimmed it down some looks like Doug did to.
Posted By: Doug66

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/30/15 01:40 PM

Yes I did trim the front of the pan. Made it the same distance to the jaw as it was on the back side.
Posted By: mixed bag

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 04/30/15 02:34 PM

Your modified trap looks very good.I am concerned bout the size of the #2 as I have some very large yotes in my area.I wish Andy would comment on his use of the #2s.Doug66, do you run all #2s or some of each;2s and 3s?I've held every yote that stepped in my duke 1 3/4 so I guess the 2s would be fine, but always feel better when I'm not near domestics to stake down a #3.Biggest meanest yote I ever caught was in one of my duke 1 3/4 so think I'm worrying over nothing. You guys use steel pan covers on your traps for added kill area?I didn't trap last fall due to injury, but year before I had a lot of very close misses;inside the jaws.Thats very frustrating to see a track right next to the pan,and 2 years ago I had it numerous times.I like the pan size on the #2 but wonder if screen cover would be helpful on the #3.I only get to set about 2 weeks a year with my job and if I miss one that's usually my only shot at it

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 05/01/15 07:22 PM

The 4s I've used held wolves here.
I use screen covers on all mine works great 3s and4s just make sure to file to get enough tension , so it will not fire making set.
Posted By: NYCOYOTE

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/01/18 12:05 AM

red mt,
How much filing are you doing to get that pan tension? I was playing with the #3 Montgomery tonight with a stiff screen from Marty smith and it was firing before I could push the loose jaw level.

I figured I would ask before I file anything
Posted By: btomlin

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/01/18 12:19 AM

I believe Red puts 3 triangle file strokes on upper side of “dog slope” right where it turns and goes vertical....that’s what he told me anyways and I did to some of mine. I was surprised how little it takes
Posted By: red mt

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/01/18 12:34 AM

Nycoyote, Btomlin gotter right.
It takes very little for 3 lbs you will find the stiffer the screen more tension needed. just give it a stroke at a time until you get what you want that's how we all done it.
We all do it a bit different on traps hope it works well for ya .

Any chance you could post some pics?

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/01/18 01:23 AM

I like to file a nite latch into mine. I will say they are some fast little traps. The only problem I have with them is I don't own enough of them! They keep the most consistent pan tension of all the dogless traps I own. majority of mine are 2.5 -3 lbs .I want to be abel to catch any foxes that work my sets lol and stinkers

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/01/18 02:50 PM

I got some #2s in a trade and some of them won't set. Even with the pan all the way down the jaw won't clear. Looks like I'm going to have to file quite a bit off. I was planning on bending the jaw tips up and this has a tendency to suck the jaws in slightly so this will only compound the issue. Has anyone else had this problem?

It sounds like the pan assembly needs to be loosened up where it attached to the frame so it can slide forward a tad or the frame bent up where the pan assembly attaches to move the dog toward the center of the trap. I'm new at the dogless also so I could be completely wrong btw.

I wouldn't do anything until Red Mt. posts though.......

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/01/18 07:35 PM

Take cross member to the trap bend towards you that was a oops Moment lol
Pair of big channel lock pliers.or a trap adjuster if you have one not big deal really

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/02/18 07:00 PM

They are a popular trap lately

Got 11 dozen in or coming in the shop for mods
Posted By: Coyotejody1979

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/02/18 08:23 PM

How do they compare to the bridger #2 dogless?
Posted By: nightstalker1

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/03/18 03:10 AM

Both solid traps

COMPLETELY different dog-less systems

round jaw vs square jaw too
Posted By: possumcatcher

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/03/18 04:18 AM

I got some older ones. They are #4s but are square jaw. Look about the size of a bridger #3. Think the bridger #3 lam kits would work or not?

I got a few dozen of the monty #2 dogless to try out on the 3rd season with them, other than rechaining. Them I like them use them in areas with fox and coyote .

Sounds like the problem I recently had with some 3s. I fixed it by bending the pan up a little. Now it will drop farther and let the dog clear the jaw while setting. You just have to tweak it up/down until you get both jaw clearance to set and a level pan after it's set.

Base plated, D-ring, center swiveled, bubble tipped jaws, JC Connor swivels and springs. Pans set to 2#-2-1/4# with no travel.

yep got mine from Andy after he tried them the first season. The #2 can hold it's own.

I just bought a dozen #3's a few days ago. I've ben filing the dog shorter to make sure the jaw clears. Old Monty's from the 70's-80's didn't have that issue. But these will work well when ready to go.

Hey 3togo, where did you happen to find some of them to buy? Seems like no one has any in stock.

No need to file to get the jaw to clear all got to do is pull cross member to the trap a bit vice works well easy push away to get jaws closer to the dog

Well after reading this post I ordered a couple of #2's to mess around with.

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/07/18 02:54 AM

Scheide, I bought them from F&T about 3 weeks ago. In a few weeks I plan on buying a dozen #3 offsets also to give a try. I had a #3 dog on last year that I caught 4 yotes in, all good foot holds. Also caught 2 others in an original Monty #2 dogless 2 coil. I'm going to 4 coil the older #3's but the 2's still are very strong.
Posted By: illinideer

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 03/08/18 11:15 PM

I got my num 2's today overall I like the trap very consistent pan pressure both are breaking right 2.5 lbs, really strong springs and the jaw face has no sharp edges.

Mine don't lay as flat as Doug66's I think I need to open up the eye some on the pan hinge point so I can bend the cross member back to get it to lay a little flatter. I will base plate them and upgrade the chain later on. I did cut off some of the pan length

I have some. Like others I base plated and replaced chain. In-line swivel. I also 4 coiled. Mine hold exceptionally well. If I where to add to my inventory this off season. That was the trap I was wanting. They are very good traps imo.

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 05/11/21 12:45 PM

I am a long spring user, but I have been humoring trying some #2 Victor/Mont out this year and see. I have looked at the #3 and liked how well it was made too. So far the trappers in my area that use either have said very very good things about them.

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 06/07/21 08:16 PM

I have 2 seasons on my Monty's since I posted in 2018. Have held every coyote that stepped in. Most are like yoteguts pictures, full foot in the trap. Other than filing the night latch mine are still stock.

However, they do not hold up to an excavator driving over them.

Re: Montgomery dogless traps - 06/07/21 09:51 PM

They are mainly the only traps I use, besides for the couple MB 550’s I have. Until I find something better, I am sticking with the Monty dogless.

So I got my first Montgomery style dogless traps today. They are actually from wolf creek. I’m messing around with the dogless trigger setup. Is it possible to night latch them? There isn’t a lot of travel, but more than I’ve had with the bridgers and some other factory nightlatched traps I’ve used in the past!

Pretty happy with them other than that!

I have had the same results also!! The #3 two coil offset jaw is a good coyote trap. If you are good at adjusting/tinkering with traps they can be made into a Very Good coyote trap! Sorry IMO. The #2 vic/mont. is junk for a coyote trap. One more thing. I like short Chains 16" to 18". When set up right they are a vary good coyote trap for the money.
