Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/08/07 05:46 PM

The new wolf trapping manual and DVD from the Alaska Trappers association are now available. You can get them at the cutting edge in Fairbanks or contact mailto:info@alaskatrappers.org. They are $25 each or $40 for both. I spent most of last night reading the manual and it is extremely well done and thorough.

How long was it before the wolves noticed your buddy above them?

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/08/07 07:03 PM

I think I gotta take a shot! If they kill the moose under your tree....then what? How long will you be up there until they finish it off? (LOL)

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/08/07 08:22 PM

Man, if I would have been in that stand with a bow.......The first 3 wouldn't have known what hit them. They might have just thought it was a errand claw or tooth.

Your buddy must not have realized that wolves can't climb??

Rick, you could see the "hitch" in his giddyup too?

Rick, they are not on the website yet, just click on the "contact us" down near the bottom of the ATA site and you can email Angel Knapp or call the cutting edge at 907.452.7477.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/09/07 04:11 PM

Rick, You didn't hear any out cry from the bios that actually manage popualtions or habitat in Idaho, Montana or Wyoming. Its just those protect everything "Parkies". Heck, most of us thought it was great when they got Parvo in 2005 and lost most of the pups.
Posted By: bcaber

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/09/07 05:08 PM

Dusty - When I said manage pops and habitat I was talking more about what the wolves are munching. Obviously, the big dogs are still listed and we cannot do much there yet.

Is there anything in the wolf trapping manual about using Pugs to lure wolves into a #9 or a gaggle of snares? hehehhehehehhehe \:\)

Wonder how cute people are going to feel when they start finding steaming piles of pet hair ;\) It's bound to happen, just hope it don't happen to one of their kids.

Either capture that wolf or kill that wolf.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/09/07 07:06 PM

I read a story in last month's Alaska magazine about this wolf (my wife bought it for me). Take a wild guess who is leading the campaign to save this animal????

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/09/07 07:39 PM

Unfortunately, those people think it is "real" wildlife, just like on the Disney movie. And then you have a world famous author who "dramatizes" wildlife and makes it all sound so lovable and "humanizes" animals to so many readers who have no clue. No wonder what it is so tough to get support for what we do? I refuse to read his articles or books any longer.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/09/07 07:56 PM

I read that article in alaska magazine, I don't buy that trash rag anymore, it is only for them outsiders, not anything to do with us. Tht article was crap, someone else caught a black wolf and everyone was flipping out because they thought it was romeo, got a reward to catch them, it says in the article that part of its area is in an open area for hunting, trapping. I am surprised no one hasn't whacked it yet.
hopefully he will eat a few more $500+ dogs, then they can all see how cute and cuddely they made it.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/10/07 01:17 AM

Geesh you guys...

That wasn't a wolf, that was a really big mouse.

That's what they eat...mice. I read it in a Fowat book.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/12/07 11:10 PM

The Wolf Manual and the Wolf DVD are now officially for sale by ATA.

As Bearbait says, they are $25 (+ $5 S&H)for either, or the best deal is BOTH for $40 (+ $5 S&H.)

To pay by check or M.O., send them to the ATA address: P.O. Box 82177, Fairbanks, AK 99708. To pay by credit card, call the ATA retail store in Fairbanks at 907-457-1774 during regular business hours. (By that I mean regular business hours in the ALASKA time zone!)

I am not particularly objective about these items, since I have a lot of dang hours invested in editing the manual and a lot of time dealing with the DVD project as well.

But I can assure you that these are both incredibly well done products! A ton of time went into picking the brains of some of the top wolf trappers in Alaska. We have been working on the production of the manual for several years. The interviews took a lot of time. But WOW, it was worth it!

I wish there had been something like these when I first came into the country and wanted to try and learn to trap wolves. I could have saved myself a ton of time and money (learning some of the info the hard way...!)

I honestly think that anyone can learn enough to have a reasonable chance to catch a wolf with the info in these products. And if you are already an experienced wolf trapper, there are a few handy tricks of the trade that you will find useful too.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/13/07 11:44 PM

Alan,
We got about 3 inches of rain hear in some areas more! Set up two dog sets Monday before a big storm, checked them in the rain yesterday, all washed out as it was raining I didn't reset! This morning had a 9 month old Juv. Female. Man that trap was exposed..LOL Who said females are smart!!

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/14/07 12:42 AM

Thanks Bearbait,have done.

Rick P,yes finally got them out, lost 16 houses,1000's round bales of hay, livestock ??? and 100's of miles of fencing.
No lives lost in our area .

Ed,good to see you have finally got rain, what out that the Mary River dont flood again.
That 9 month old female must have been dingo as that fits in with the breeding season.
I caught a big male dog like that up at Eukey except that my trap started of in a dry wash, had some rain which covered the trap with 6 inches of water.
On my way home from Stanthorpe I drove past the trap site and here is this big male dog up to his belly in the water in my trap.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/14/07 01:02 AM

nah, them sugar cane toad things, that ooze that yellow poison puss. Saw it on discovery channel. can you snare kangaroo's
Posted By: Alan McKenzie

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/14/07 01:12 AM

The cane toads can very easily be trapped in cage traps with a light attached however it is not viable .
Of a night using a spotlight you can pick up a thousand or more without to much effort.

Yes it is very easy to snare roo's,usually on a fence line where they push under the bottom or second wire.
Feral pigs follow the same trails so after a while you have a well worn pad with a damaged fence,so setting a snare is easy.
As kids we used to snare them using fencing wire.
None of the fancy 1x19 or 7x7 ect was available.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/14/07 01:18 AM

you get money for picking up all those toads???
is it legal to snare roo's?? mybuddy has a freind over there and they go around and shoot the crap out of em, throw em in a freezer truck and sell the meat. I think he said they got a couple hundred in a few nights, crocdile dundee style, 223 and spot lights.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/14/07 01:53 AM

No money for toads .

Roo carcases are worth between .65 cents and $1-00 per kilogram.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/14/07 04:33 PM

And about that Wolf Trapping Manual.....! Cane toads notwithstanding.

Someone on the Wolf Manual thread on the main forum had mentioned that he had contacted the ATA retail outlet (Cutting Edge, in Fairbanks) and they had not received the merchandise.

I just checked and copies of both the manual and the DVD were dropped off at the C-E last night.

It is now completely safe to send in your money!

No worries!

I bet some of that info will come in useful in trapping dogs. But even if it doesn't, the manual is fun to read and the DVD is fun to watch!

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/21/07 07:55 PM

Pete received my copy of book and DVD yesterday. Very quick delivery to Canada. Nice tie in as I just returned from hosting a wolf harvesting seminar out at our lodge. We had 14 trappers in attendence and had a great time. Much of the material we covered was in your publication as well. Guess a wolf is wolf regarless of it's nationality LOL. Bottom line is you folks did a great job and it is well worth the money. Thanks to your organization for putting it together.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/22/07 11:56 AM

Canada is not that far away from Alaska. In fact, we tend to think of you guys as "that quaint country just to the south of us.....!"

Have a look and give us your evaluation of the manual and DVD, please. I am anxious to know what some other experienced wolf trappers in other regions think of them.

Thanks,

Pete

I ordered mine on Monday. I hope to put a few wolf sets out next year.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/22/07 10:49 PM

Actually Pete we're to the east of you as well!! I've watched the DVD and thought the material was well done. The manual looks more detailed and I haven't read it all yet. The only comment I would make is that when you do an update you might want to look at some of changes in snare design. Personally I'm using a snare design very similiar to yours i.e #9 wire with 3/32 snare crimped on. However some of my buddies are using wammies, killer springs, and ram snares. They probably are worth looking into. Regardless the manual and DVD are money well spent. If cost is an issue I would go with just the manual. Pretty good deal for the package though

Just ordered mine today. Can't wait.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/26/07 05:54 AM

I got mine on Friday. I thought the DVD was a little short too. I just can't get enough of hunting and trapping videos.

The manual is awesome. There are a lot of sets I could put to use next year unless of course we get a boat load of snow while in Hawaii. I might have to give them a try if that's the case.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/26/07 12:10 PM

Thanks for your comments guys.

The length of the video was a huge issue between ATA and the producer. Quite frankly, we were appalled when we found out that it was not longer. We had quite a tussle with the producer about it, but unfortunately this little detail was not specifically dealt with in the contract. By the time we realized what was going on, we could not go back and add more footage without significantly adding to our production cost. It was a learning experience for us.

Should we get around to producing a sequel, rest assured that we have learned out lesson!

Rick, We threw the wolverine stuff into the manual as a bonus! I think it was a good decision.

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 02/26/07 05:09 PM

I've not viewed the DVD yet, but have found the manual to be very informative and an enjoyable read as well. Quotes intermingled with instruction and lots of useful illustrations an pics are a bonus. I'd highly recommend this manual.

If you guys want editing input, let us know where to send it. A few typos common to a first printing. My pages are coming loose from the binding at the top. The wife runs a library branch so I'll dab some binding glue in to take care of that...

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 03/01/07 11:01 PM

Just got the DVD and manual and I just watched the DVD at my work desk. It is informative, good to "see" it rather than read about it and try to "vision" it. Now, I am bored, so Iguess I will read the manual,..
maybe I will make good use of the caribou bones and head I just got.. I beeter not do any trail sets though, i am liable to catch a whole pack, tied together with a guy in a basket behind em this weekend

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 03/02/07 01:40 PM

My DVD and Manual arrived today in 100% condition.
First thing I did was put on the DVD and whilst watching it ran a row of stitches down the binding on the manual with my harness machine.
Pete I have learned a bunch of things especially on snaring.

Bloody good value, would recomend it to anybody interested in trapping.

A few minor problems though,NO SNOW ,WOLVES OR WOLVERINE WHERE I LIVE!

Re: Wolf Trapping Manual - 03/21/07 06:27 PM

There may be some hope for you Idaho guys on the wolves. The area biologist that was here for several years and fought the same battle, is now stationed in Pocatello and has just been named to a state wolf management team. He is also a trapper.
