Knowing Salmon from Shinola - 06/08/23 06:51 PM
Perhaps it's illusion, but I'd guess confusion
Over names of the myriad kinds
That inhabit the sea and the rivers near me
It's tough keeping straight in our minds.
There's those that think the right name is pink
But I get nervous; all jumpy
When I sit and I wish that this slimy fish
Would always be called just a humpy.
There's sockeye too, that when you're new
And don't realize what you've said.
That the sourdough's and us that knows
Simply call the fish a red.
And Oh! The chum, the handsome one
That fights like a veritable log
Should rightly be called by us less enthralled
By the more fitting name of dog.
The mighty chinook we all like to hook.
Now there's a worthwhile thing
That when cooked up to eat is a genuine treat
That should rightly be called the king.
My favorite though, some call coho.
Now there's some real game.
Them things'll bite, then put up a fight
But silver's the real name.
So if you're allowed to join the right crowd
Removed from those crunching granola
You'll keep this in sight, and name the fish right,
Only then you'll know fish from Shinola.
