Arctic oven heat ? - 11/22/19 04:21 PM

Just got the 10-foot model. Anyone heat these tents with propane in the winter? I have one of those Mr Buddy heaters Im thinking of trying.

Propane wont flow on a cold day...been there done that.

I would not trade my 10X 12 wall tent with a nice warm wood stove, with all kinds of room, and be able dry your gear, and even skin, or work on your snowmachiene if needed.

I stayed in a AO before in the fall, woke up cramped, and wet from condensation from the stove, floor, and walls wet ,and could not wear shoes inside it.

The Mr Buddy heater uses 2 - 1lb propane bottles that mount on the stove. Ive used the stove in winter with no problems but never in an AO. I am replacing my wall tent with the AO for several reasons. Easier to set up, will hold a good snow load, and the double wall is warmer than any wall tent I've ever used. Never had condensation problems in the AO either.

While we are on the subject of AO's I have a 12x13 foot Arktika that I would like to sell. I want to downsize. I don't know if I'm allowed to post this here, oh well.
It's in great shape, with heavy duty floor saver.

Seems like it would make a lot of moisture in the tent.

I’ve spent a lot of time in an AO . Just a lantern was good to about +20. At -40 it held heat ok. Only ever used wood stove. Condensation? None. I always said that you could pour water over hot stones in one and the walls would remain dry. Ice buildup on the inside of the fly , just knock it off every so often.

Have used a Nuway propane stove a fair bit in an AO. Always have used their 2 burner model. With both burners going on high, the tent warms up real quick. For sleeping, leaving one burner on low-med (depending on the nightly low temps) keeps the temp in the tent around 40 deg. I'm a big fan of them. I think the coldest I've camped with the propane stove was 30 below and it worked fine. A regular 20 lb tank seems to last around 3-5 nights running a burner on low for sleeping. Inner tent walls have always stayed dry and condensation on the inside of the fly has always been pretty minimal.

Sounds like it works well. Which model do you have?

How breathable are the Arctic ovens? Any concern over carbon monoxide with propane? I know with breathable wall tents it's not a concern.

I think propane doesn't work below about -20, but with the one pounders that's not a problem. Warm them up a bit if it's really cold, and as the tent warms the flame will get stronger and stronger as the temp increases.

In my 8x10 snlwtrekker I like my four dog titanium wood stove and having the ability to burn all night and never let the tent get below freezing. For convenience in my insulated pop up ice fishing shelter nothing beats propane for speed and ease of setup.

I've used the two burner Nuway propane stove as well. It direct vents outside so no worries for CO. Like mentioned using it on one burner at night keeps a good temp. I have a grommet in the side wall to run a propane hose into the tent from outside during the fall, but keep the tank inside during the winter. The exterior fly gets iced up but the inside stays dry with the breathable fabric they use for it. I would suggest a fan of some sort to get heat to the floor but thats just me

I don't remember, it's either the 3500 or 4000. They do work well, though using propane for a heat source is probably better suited for trips that are shorter than a week or so due to having to haul multiple propane bottles.

Like Taiga said, the Nuway stove vents direct to the outside. The AO tents have vent tubes that you can open to increase airflow if needed. I've never really been that concerned about CO. Seems like the AO breath well enough for it to not be a concern. Some folks I know do bring a battery powered CO detector to use in their AO. I usually leave a few inches of the door zipper open and have a vent open in the wall to ensure plenty of airflow. I've also used a small sheet metal screw to ensure that the stove pipe stays properly attached to the stove.

I use a CO detector in my little bear hunting cabin/shack, I have propane for cooking, lighting, and a little bit of heat. I'm surprised at how often the CO alarm goes off.

Ya, in a cabin I can see that for sure. Canvas tents are so breathable it is less of a concern. I just wondered about the ao in terms of breathability.

Been using the Nuway 2 burner stove in AO's for years now and been very happy with it. My experiences are the same as Bairdi and Taiga's. In the winter I always put the propane tank in the tent and I always have the two vents open to clear out any condensation and such.
