NC Turkey - 04/27/24 02:49 PM

Got my first turkey this morning. First time hunting this area this season. Walked the road bed halfway before daylight an stopped a waited. Hoped to hear a gobble from somewhere. Heard one gobble up on the ridge. So I took off up the hill on a four wheeler trail that goes into a field. Set up an hoped they would come off the ridge into the field. I don’t know how to call a turkey. I’ve tried an probably ran them off not sure. So I get my decoy set up an I get into the wood line and wait. I don’t try to do any calling. I sit probably one hour an fifteen minutes an see a hen coming, then a Tom. The Tom is following the hen. Heading right for my decoy, then a jake comes in from the other side of the field. I was hoping the jake didn’t mess things up an he didn’t. Got the Tom around 30yds an got it done.
10” beard
7/8” spurs
Not an exciting story to read but that’s the way it went.

Haha, read some of my post about turkey numbers being low and my suggestions for improving them. You’ll figure it out. Goes along with exactly what I’ve said.

Is it about using a decoy?
If so, sounds like I need to learn to call. I guess that one don’t count then.
Been tryin for three years to get a turkey. It finally happened.

Good deal. Nothing wrong with decoys one bit. How many hunters use only their natural voice to call in a bird, shoot it with a homemade bow and arrow, and don't use factory made camouflage? Zero. So in the end we all use technology to our advantage. Can't pick and choose which technology is acceptable. The story was great and you have one more bird than I do this season.

Nothin' wrong with that hunt story. I've killed several under very similar circumstances....and will probably kill more similarly.

WB don't like decoys. I don't use them much, but they're effective sometimes.

If it's legal...DO IT!

Congrats!

Congratulations. You probably haven’t ran any off there’s no right or wrong way to call . Get a call a push button, slate, box or any and learn how to make the various turkey calls and let the turkey tell you what he wants to hear, but soft little clucks and purrs with a yelp now and then will do the trick and don’t be afraid to shut up and just scratch the leaves to bring them in

Congratulations. Very good for figuring it out and making it happen. Calling is not hard as many want you to think it is. Get you a good slate call, lots of good videos around. Don’t worry about how you sound. Just make turkey noises, a gobbler won’t care. A cluck and purr, will kill you more gobblers than you want to tote out. If ya want some help will calling, send me a message. Be glad to help, not a world champion or anything. But have fooled a few long beards into thinking he was in love.

Good advice from jalstat. Several times I have heard what I thought was a hunter to find the poor sounding calls were from a real turkey.

G Hose, congrats man. First longbeard… good stuff.

TONS of info out there on calling turkeys. I grew up on Will Primos VHS tapes. Get the basics down and learn when to be aggressive and when not to be. I get more way more bang outta talking to them then I do shooting them anymore. When you decide to learn a diaphragm call, practice while driving. That way you ain’t pizzing off your lady or your coworkers.

Again, congrats.
