4 foot fiber glass drownder - 04/20/24 03:53 PM

I was just think that beaver have 10 feet 1/2 inch fiber glass drownders why can’t muskrats and raccoons have 4 foot 3/8 inch drownders.

Do you guys think this would be a good idea or not?

Too short to cover most locations unless sticking exclusively to the outside bends of rivers. Longer drowners are almost always more versatile. Even my 10 foot beaver rods get shoved aside for 12ft in most locations.

I did buy some 4 ft metal drowners once that I thought I'd use for coon but never found spots where I felt comfortable using them.

Remember for a drowning rod to be stable you need at least a foot or more driven into the bottom so 4 feet doesn't get you far from the bank.

I have 12' , 10' and 6 ' rods. The 6's get a little use but not much.

You want to use 1/2” rods. 3/8” are not heavy enough to deal with raccoons or larger animals.

4’ is also too short for anything by Mink and Muskrats.

You’re wasting your time and money on 4’ rods. You need to remember at least a foot gets shoved in the mud. Even 6 are near worthless.

It depends on the bottom, theres no way you’re shoving a rod 12” deep in some of the rocky and hard clay creeks here. That said, 4’ would only be useful for muskrat and mink even in those rocky creeks. I use mostly 6’ and there are places anything longer wouldn’t work well.
