Do you work alone?

Do you work alone? - 04/16/24 01:00 PM

Back when I worked, I almost always had jobs where I worked alone. HVAC and facilities maintenance ( building automation, monitoring, controls and surveillance, mostly) was a one man show for the most part. There were people I could call if I had a problem or a question but, for the majority of the time, just me.

Now that I'm retired, I still prefer to work alone. Home maintenance projects, tearing down an old farm building or rebuilding part of one or just being outside. Family complains that I should let them help. I don't want the help. I can work at my speed, take a break when I want. I know my limitations. Plus, I like the challenge of having to figure things out or how to do some jobs by myself.

Anybody else work best alone?

I work and play alone. When working I don't like having anyone under foot, I want to do it my way and most people talk too much. The same goes for hunting, fishing, trapping and anything else I do for fun. Just not much of a people person.

Always worked alone, still do.
When I was a kid I used to go work with my father, he always worked alone most of the time. He did things his way, for example moving heavy machinery, he had methods that worked when he was by himself... I'd get impatient and want to just bull the thing around....I now understand...lol, find myself doing a lot of the things he did.

I was talking just recently with my brother about this same thing. Working alone. He and I actually work well together. But we both do lots of things by our selves alone. Being a gabber, I tend to get more done when I work alone. I've done most all my trapping alone lots of hunting and fishing.
As a Fire fighter I really can't say I was working alone doing that job. When I worked my side job as a diver. I was usually with a crew of people on those jobs. But once I was in the water on river bottom I was basically working alone. Big part of what I liked about that job only listening to my breathing and what ever song I have running in my head. . Pretty hard for anyone to be looking over your shoulder on river bottom.
Now that Im older and considered handicapped. I have to think more about what I do without close back up.

Yes, and I hunt big game along and do all work I can alone. Remodeled entire kitchen last year and did everything alone including hanging all new cabinets.
Lone wuff, when it comes to working alone but there are times a person does need a hand doing somethings.

Never gave it much thought. But I spent the majority of my life, working alone. One man Boat/Body repair shop, delivered rural mail, heavy equipment operator.

Kind of enjoy a trapline partner though. Someone to laugh at , or someone to laugh at you. Extra set of hands can be nice in the occasional predicament.

I've always joked that there are/were very few people qualified to supervise me. I'm talking about actually working to get things done no matter what it is. I gravitate towards people who know what they're doing and want to get the job done. No heroic displays for fifteen minutes while the boss is around. Those types are useless. By and large, I prefer to work alone.

I am alone in my truck. Wander around in wild places alone a lot. I enjoy the company of others depending on who the others are. I am prone to wandering off when the others dont suit me.

90% of the time. That way I get it done without having to listen to someone complaining about working.

It's a good feeling to be your own boss (even if you have one)

Pretty much do everything alone, hunt, fish, traps and projects, projects mainly because I know what results I'm after and admit I'm a poor communicater in expressing what I'm after and even make changes on the fly

Re: Do you work alone? - 04/16/24 02:24 PM

I have almost always worked alone just by the nature of what I do. Fishing and hunting I usually have all kinds of friends who will gladly join me, occasionally a trapper too. I'm not here to beat my chest, but inviting a young person to join me has proven to be both beneficial for them but also fun for me.

There are tons of kids and elderly ppl that love that sort of thing.

I always thought I was odd because I would rather be alone, even when i was a kid. This thread makes me feel a bit better. I enjoy helping people, but when it comes to doing my own things, I would rather just be left alone.

Re: Do you work alone? - 04/16/24 06:30 PM

Most of my work like has been alone.

I'm a fast mover and most people can't keep up with me anyways. I prefer to work alone because if something does get messed up, I know who to blame and what happened.

I've worked alone the vast majority of my working years. Most people irritate me, so it works out well.

I have worked with others my entire career. As a supervisor hands on. Something changed in the culture. Relentless entertainment of stupidity. The younger crowd knew more than the senior work force. So I retired and let them have at it. Best decision I made.

Now I work independently. Work when I want. It is fantastic. Best decision I ever made.

Re: Do you work alone? - 04/16/24 09:56 PM

I have wondered if some people associate "alone" with "lonely". Not the same. When I am doing things alone, I have been known to give myself what for when I do something dumb or the light bulb comes on. Slap myself on the forehead.

I don't mind if someone is around when the chainsaw is running as long as they stay a good, safe distance away.
