Ticks attacked to white

Ticks attacked to white - 04/15/24 01:48 PM

This is a sheet my wife left out in the field when getting a swarm of bees yesterday. Today when she went back to pick it up and see if all the bees seemed to be moved into the swarm trap she saw the ticks on it.

I always thought ticks were attracted to white probably because of how many I get under my socks but that could just be a convenient location for them so never had anything else to back up my thoughts. Tell now.

So I believe they are attracted to white. What do you think?

Don't know about ticks, but I know that white definitely repels mosquitoes.

I went mushroom picking once and met a man in camo waving a big white flag. I asked him what was going on and he said that he was an acarologist on a standard route survey for ixodid ticks. He said ticks are attracted to white, so brushing a big piece of white cotton fabric against all the tall forbs in our forest is the most efficient way to collect all the ticks along your path, to evaluate how infested the territory is.

Interesting, I had never heard ticks were attracted to white.

All of my turkey hunting outer wear is treated with permethrin before season starts and I rarely ever see a live tick crawling. I also have draw strings on my pant legs that I cinch tight around my boots to restrict access as well. Permethrin is not a repellant, it kills them pretty quick once they make contact with it.

I'm a beekeeper. Not uncommon to take 12-15 off me a day. I don't think they are attracted to the white, they just show up there better....but Maybe?

I have noticed they are attracted to the top of bee hives, though. If you look hard you'll see them in row on the top edge. As you get close, they'll outreach their legs trying to grab on. I've seen them in rows of 5 or so.

I use the permethrin also. Especially on the boots and pants (and wrap my ankles) as ticks climb UP.

even with permithrin I pull dozens off of clothes daily if mending fence or feeding cattle. to many blasted deer. in early fall the seed ticks keep me on my toes. already have lymes just not high enough levels to affect me yet. check your pant legs as often as you can

I had a couple of ADC guys I know in a nearby state that had to clear out a cat horder's house after the woman died.

They went into the house with full white Tyvek suits taped up at the sleeves and cuffs. Gloves and respirators. Ammonia off the chart.

They immediately got covered in fleas......

Took over 100 cats out of there. Pictures of litter boxes overflowing and poop everywhere , piles of empty cat food cans. Found about a dozen deceased cats too.

Just yuck.... sick

If you read the collection method for tick surveys they use a white sheet drug over a large area due to the attraction to white in order to collect the ticks.

I was looking at some prospective hunting land with two other club members. They had on camouflage pants and I wore khaki pants. I had dozens of ticks on my pants and they didn’t even have one.

Must be something to your theory about light colors and ticks.

Ticks climb onto to whatever creature they can, color has nothing to do with it. They aren't flying around looking for targets.

Having had to do Tick surveys while in the Military, can say you want to really see ticks take a 48 " X 48 " piece of white cloth and put a golf ball sized piece of dry ice in the middle of it wait just a couple hrs and you'll want to stay completely out of the woods.
FYI for a legitimate survey 50' X 50' plot had to have 100+ ticks on the cloth, couple times had that many on me at end of the day.
Then learned that soaking BDU'S in 1 Oz of Permethrin concentrate in 5 gals of water allow to air dry could survey all day without single tick on self or uniform

Re: Ticks attacked to white - 04/15/24 07:41 PM

was out in the woods all day Saturday, not a tick to be found. Must be all the prescribed burns I do. I have read that fire is hard on ticks.
Now if we could get the deer herd reduced down to a reasonable level we could maybe go back to what it was once like around here. No ticks at all.
