Run much bigger circles and do not go into the ground or brush piles like the cottontail do.

Lots of good wabbit hunting around me,but I'm not getting another hunting dog until all the girls have moved out.

Great looking pack you’ve got.

I’m still picking out brier tips from my knees 2 months after the season closed. Fortunate to have a great population of bluetail and cottontail on my farm. Always amazed at the difference in each individual dog’s personality when different friends bring their packs to come hunt. Nothing better than hearing them give mouth on the first jump of the morning.

Re: Rabbit hunting with beagles - 04/12/24 01:33 AM

We ran a beagle and a bluetick on both cottontails and snowshoes. Only had 1 snowshoe hold up in front of Blue in 8 years. Piled into a rock overhang that was too small for Blue to reach.

Your blueticks are beautiful. I have three blueticks, the mom and her two daughters and a copper beagle. I listen to them chase rabbits year around. They are some little rabbit machines. Nothing beats listening to them, when I take them out, I tell my wife that I am going to a mountain music concert starring ‘Stella and the Blueticks”.

Re: Rabbit hunting with beagles - 04/12/24 09:01 PM

Tips I swear by:

Teach a Pup to come and down, EVERY TIME, Saves anxiety and tears when the Rabbit runs across a road or Highway.
I teach my Pups to respond to a coach's whistle, sound carries a LOOOONG way and is distinctive on a windy day, or if other hunters are about.
I run my hounds with a small fishing bell on their collar. Helps me keep track of them,. and you don't have to keep an eye on them constantly.
ABSOLUTLEY get them micro chipped.
Teach the Pup's to fetch on command, get a cap gun at a toy store, and fire it a few times while playing. Then I move up to a .22 blank, then a .38 blank.

All good tips.I also run them with a bell,,,and shoot my .22 pistol around them when pups so they don't be gun shy.I get them chasing a rabbit skin I pull through the yard on a string.

Beagles are some of the most loving and Gentle. That is why I keep and hunt with them. Just bought an AKC registered Gyp out of Indiana. She should be ready by this fall.

I got some info on some 1/2 OakHill blueticks from a guy near me. Anyone ever tryout that bloodline? I don't remember the other 1/2. He said they would have papers and are out of good hunting stock, not trial dogs. Just trying to decide on a male or female for starters.

Re: Rabbit hunting with beagles - 04/16/24 12:52 AM

I’ve got a pack of 5 at the moment.
Ugliest bunch of misfits I’ve ever had.
But they’ll run the feet off a bunny.
Pert near every beagle will run a rabbit, some just do it better others lol.
I’m colorblind when it comes to hounds. I’d hunt a poodle if he ran rabbit’s the way I like.

I also like hounds with good voices in addition to running.Don't like beagles that way over run the track also.

Re: Rabbit hunting with beagles - 04/16/24 01:54 PM

my 4 dogs are grade - no idea what the papers are

The best beagles will be the ones that can run often and given the opportunity

We have around 20-30 domestic crossed rabblts around our house we let our beagles run. Rabbits have made it around 5 years on their own - I dont feed them - they catch a few a year and more are born.......few neighbors were worried at first when they saw a weird colored rabbits down the road or under a porch but they are all used to it now and enjoy them as well.....I simply undo the kennels and let them run around our property and keep exercised when I dont have time to load them up and take them hunting.

If they don’t overrun tracks then they aren’t fast enough for me lol.
I want as fast of a beagle as I can find. Fast beagles overrun tracks, but a good pack will pick it back up mighty quick.
Slowpokes don’t eat my feed.

Re: Rabbit hunting with beagles - 04/16/24 09:40 PM

Some beagles your talking a hundred yards or more over.No thanks.I like a speed of around 4 not to slow or to fast.
Posted By: claycreech

Re: Rabbit hunting with beagles - 04/17/24 02:05 AM

You’ve seen beagles overrun a track 100 yards?
I’ve seen a super fast one overrun one 20 maybe 25 yards.
A 100 is a little crazy!!!! Lol

Re: Rabbit hunting with beagles - 04/17/24 10:35 AM

I made a quick video of my Divas chasing one behind my house. They over run a little but they move at a good pace. The video is my 4 yr old and two, two year old. About twice a year, they will catch one. I have seen them run it down and they all form a circle and nuzzle it to the ground, unhurt. I have picked the rabbit up and carried it away from them.
