Kidney Stones

Kidney Stones - 04/11/24 12:48 PM

Woke up Sunday morning thinking I was having a nightmare. Doubled up in pain and nauseous.

ER trip later and turns out that I had a 13mm kidney stone blocking one of my kidneys from emptying into my bladder. I figured that 13mm was significant based on the nurses and doctors coming by to high five me once they hit me with the morphine. Got to hang out in the hospital for 2 days while to put in a stent from my kidney to my bladder to ensure that there would be no more pluggage. I get to go back under anesthesia next Thursday in hopes that they can go in and break up the stone. Woo Hoo...

49 years old and have never had an issue. Doctor's said they suspect the 2 - 20oz Mt. Dews a day for the last 35 years...

Not sure how many folks have had to deal with this, but I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

GUNNLEG - I fought them for years. Never big one, but they are ALL debilitating. A homeopath put me on a regimen of 4 ounces oa Pipsissewa once a month (tincture in food grade vodka) and I haven't had a kidney stone in 6 years. I have a neighbor that has also been "cured" with Pipsissewa. Look into it. Good luck!

Re: Kidney Stones - 04/11/24 01:49 PM

I had a kidney stone incident around 25 years ago or so.
It started hurting while I was working on my truck…
My first thought was that I had twisted my back because I had probably moved wrong.
It kept getting worse… so I went into the house and put a hot pad on it… started feeling pain in the inside of my thigh….
I wound up driving myself to the hospital,, and sure enough… it was a stone.
I was in the hospital for a few days….
I cut down my sugar and salt and have not had any issues with them since

My son gets them regularly, been operated on a couple times and takes a medicine that's supposed to help keep them at bay.... He says the pain is a 10 on the pain scale.

I've mentioned the pipsissewa treatment but I doubt he took it.....You can lead a horse to water but.........

Just drink tons of water. That will prevent 99%of them. You can still have the dew. One rule of thumb for us "stoners" If your urine ain't clear you are making gravel in your kidney.....

Re: Kidney Stones - 04/11/24 03:29 PM

Been fighting them for 30 years. Personal best was a 13mm in one kidney and a16mm in the other at the same time. Most recent was a 10mm blocking the left kidney last November.

Still some in the right kidney I will have to deal with after the Wife's funeral.

Good luck GUNNLEG, Prayers sent.

Re: Kidney Stones - 04/11/24 04:47 PM

Have suffered them for years as well, largest I've passed is 5mm and that took about three weeks to work it's self out

I've got a small bottle of them to show people if they are interested on how many types and shapes there are , they don't just usually stay the same kind !

I've stopped all carbonated drinks of any kind due to the carbonation acting as a binder for the chemicals to grow on

I've also increased my water intake dramatically, which seems to have help over the years to produce less pain full smooth ones, there at least for me does not seem to be a set size any more for me to pass, when I passed my first one so many years ago it was the size of a pin head and I thought it was better to just die than go through more of this !!

Since then I have been to 3 urologists' with the only thing in common with all diagnosis's is the carbonation and stress levels one goes through, so I worked on the carbonation by eliminating it, that seems to have helped a lot with the time period of them showing up, the stress level is much harder to deal with though, and I believe thats the major developer in my situation. I did cut my red meat intake down and do eat more chicken and pork, not a big fan of veggies but watch what fruits I eat, some are considered bad for them as are some veggies.

After my wife's automobile accident with a ten wheeler, where eventually I lost my two older boys, I suffered a lot of the stone troubles, however they grew longer in happening as I dealt with control over something I had no control over, then my wife's colon cancer surgery last year brought them back after oh about 7 years of peace.

It's the only thing I can really put a finger on to cause them to return. As nothing else had changed since my watching my diet !

On a side note I've never had to have any sonic blasted or surgery to remove and thankful for that even though the passing now takes time and is uncomfortable, though it seems with me I have developed a high tolerance for dealing with the pain and only take a couple high grade Tylenol when it seems necessary, while still passing different size's of them. Most now are of the smooth kind and really don't tear me up to the point of constant walking and fluid intake to force them to move.

I don't advise that for others who constantly throw goat horn stones or large ones, I say what works for me, I've tried a lot of home remedies which don't seem to have any more effect on them than control the carbonation and stress levels.

I don't know any one except here now after reading this thread that has gone on and never had any more in their life, Kudos to you people. The urologists' did all state that once one appears sooner or later another will down the road !

Good luck to all of you having anymore !!

Re: Kidney Stones - 04/11/24 04:53 PM

I've heard it compared to childbirth. Gotta be much worse. After a couple years, the wife was hinting about having another kid. I never heard of a guy that passed a stone hinting that he wanted another one!!!

Re: Kidney Stones - 04/11/24 04:56 PM

Gulo, great point ! I'd also say the woman has a choice as well, stones appear with the only notice that it's a painful appearance and a lasting memory, so in that way they are quite the same !!

Re: Kidney Stones - 04/11/24 08:36 PM

As for the baby thing. My first one the nurse came into the room laughing saying "now you know how it feels to have a baby" I went back NO it's normal for a woma to have a baby . IT IS NOT normal for a man to pee a rock !!!

Re: Kidney Stones - 04/11/24 09:13 PM

I'v had them a few times. But for ten years or more I have been taking a cranberry capsule and a big swig of cranberry juice with my meds every day. Since then I haven't had any. I wouldn't wish them on anyone. I had a few that they could not crush with ultra sound and had to go in after them. In the process of removing them they tore my ureter (tube from kidney to bladder) and had to go in and reconnect it. Fun times.

Re: Kidney Stones - 04/11/24 11:52 PM

Re: Kidney Stones - 04/12/24 03:20 AM

I have had them since I was a little kid, nobody ever could help or figure it out. I was in the dentist office one day reading a Men’s Health mag. Hit me that is what I have been dealing with for years. Has been better ever since then. I still get one now and again but nothing like I used too. Drink lots of water that has helped the most.

My doctor now asked a few years ago if I had kidney stones in the past as I now have kidney damage. They changed my blood pressure meds as to no do more damage.
