2024 Spring Black Bear Season

2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 04/11/24 04:32 AM

Spent the last few days getting the baits ready to go. Season opens April 22nd.

[Linked Image]

Moving one of my baits this year to a new location. It’s always exciting to see what shows up in a new area!

[Linked Image]

Barrel is all setup and baited at the new spot. Should only take a day or two for the first bear to show up!

[Linked Image]

View from the treestand. 16 yards treestand to the barrel.

[Linked Image]

Man there’s still lots of snow in the bush in some spots!

[Linked Image]

And a look at the 2nd bait from the treestand. 18 yards treestand to the barrel at this one.

I’ll post pics of some bears as they come in. If anyone wants to show their Spring Bear action too, that would be cool!

That second pic from the bottom- looks like a big pair of eyes staring out from behind the tree.
Looks like a big black thing standing upright, maybe a bear,or...

JP,
Great taxidermy skills!

Good luck on the bears.

Georgia don't have a spring season. And down here in the wet pineywoods of Southeast Ga the season is 12 days in late Sept and early Oct. Most hunt with hounds here in these swamps.

Our season in WI doesn't open until the Wednesday after Labor Day, but we're allowed to start baiting April 15th. I've got a tag for this fall's season and got my first bait out this afternoon with my daughter. Just some gas station corn and fish fry oil until my cookie guy can get me some real bait. Didn't think we'd see much right away, but had a bear on it by 6:30 pm same day. My dad was at the cabin and spooked it off the bait, but it was back an hour later.

The bigger one go to the high end, smaller ones to the low.

Just funnin with ya man. I do get a kick out of you Canucks and the measures you go through.

Looks like a great hide on that one. Best of luck..

tiguy, are you hunting bears on private property?
Posted By: tlguy

Re: 2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 04/22/24 04:52 PM

Yes, this is private property, but it's 80 acres surrounded by thousands of public. In fact, a guy could throw a corn kernel onto public from this bait site. Not much competition from bait sitters where were at, at least not enough to worry about someone else cutting off the traffic. Lots of dog hunters around though.

You’d be surprised at how little rain goes into a barrel like that.

But no, I’m not worried about corn getting wet.

Me neither, something like that comes by it’s gettin it. Sucks to end it so early, but there’s always buddies with tags so we can sit. Seems we always tagged out before the real action starts….gets crazy when the leaves & bugs are out.

25 35 years ago, I used to hunt spring bear in Canadastan.
Ontario,Manitoba, Saskatchewan.
Wanna get a great hide, hunt early/ mid May.
Wanna chance at a bruiser, late may into June.
Back then, it was a few 5 gallon buckets dumped n covered with logs. Lol.

Re: 2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 04/23/24 01:09 AM

I did a lot of spot & stalk spring bear hunting in Alaska but Maine hasn't had a spring season for about forty years. A friend hunted spring bear over bait in New Brunswick. He said the males made a croaking sound as they moved through the woods checking out baits for females. Have you guys ever heard that?
Posted By: Jurassic Park

Re: 2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 04/23/24 01:14 AM

I don’t think I’ve heard a croaking sound. But I hear them chomping the teeth when they come in. Also they make a sound to each other kinda nasally.

I set my barrels up similar to how you do yours. Ten feet of chain through the bungs connected to a small tree with an eight inch hole centered on the opposite end. The bear can toss the barrel around but can't drag it off. The bait stays dry.

One thing I've learned about bears is..., nuttin. Lol.

Another thing I've learned is..., for younger bear, it really don't matter what you do. Just keep feed out.

You after a good pelt/ eater size of gonna try for an old bruiser?

Best of luck JP and others doing a hunt this spring.
I enjoy seeing dead bears.

Re: 2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 04/23/24 02:38 AM

I’m always after a big bear. Fur quality is also important. That bear in my trail cam pics has a beautiful uniform fur coat! Just not sure if he’s big enough. I’d like to see him in person to judge for sure.

My camera is about 7’ up in the tree pointing down, so he should be bigger in person.

Are you bear hunting this year bucks?

Where we hunt on private land you don’t need much. The closest hunter would be 10+ miles away. Don’t need the fancy $$$ totes of cookie dough trail mix bait for these buggers. Years ago when we had baits on crown land, we had another hunter a few miles away that had awesome bait from a doughnut shop, when we sat with him the odd time, you could tell the bear preferred his site…lol.

This setup holds 1100lbs of corn. Keeps me from baiting too often.

Anything I can get my hands on. Granola has been my favorite but it's been hard to come by. My supplier used to get it directly from Nature Valley but someone else must have outbid him or they found out it was being used for bear bait and shut him off.

Donuts work well if you can get your hands on them. They're hard to come by in quantity.

The bear/s twisted the chain on the barrel. They bat it around while they paw at the bait.

What's the bag limit where you are JP? That is a really nice bear. Looks fat enough to be good eating as well. I'd be waiting for him an hour after I saw that pic!
Here in Alaska, much of the state is a 3 black bear limit per year. Much of the state has gone to a 2 griz bear limit also. There are very few places where you only get blacks at your bait. Western Alaska has quite a bit of places where you will only get griz at your bait.
Hope you get something better than that first bear pic!

Re: 2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 04/24/24 12:15 AM

martentrapper, we can only shoot one Bear a year here. Hopefully they’ll change that and allow us 2 per year.

I’m glad we don’t have grizzlies! I don’t think I’d be an archery hunter anymore if we did lol.

Most hunters don't like plastic barrels because the bears chew them up!

Oh man the baits just getting started! There will be more than 20 bears showing up at each of these baits. By the end of May and early June I wouldn’t be surprised if a bigger boar shows up during mating season.

The big old ones like to come in to scent check the sows and see if any are in heat. They won’t eat too much. Just checking.

These bear’s probably aren’t going anywhere till I stop baiting.

Looking for a great hide..now.

Looking for a big one, wait till late May/ early June.

I hunted Canada for years. Seemed year in/ year out, the best times to shoot a bigger were later although the hides suffered.
And bugs SUCKED later!!!
Best of luck JP.

I’m always hoping a Cinnamon will show up, but that’s pretty rare. I think I’ve gotten pics of 2 in all the years I’ve been bear hunting. And one was a newborn cub, and the other wasn’t even that great.

Some of the blacks will have a nice white blaze on the chest.

But if I wanted a good crack at Cinnamon’s or a blonde, I’d go to Western Manitoba. Very good population of them out there.
One year soon I’m going to start baiting out West to get one.

Yup! The mosquitoes are a serious thing as Bear season goes on. They can really ruin the fun!

For me, fur quality is important. Im looking for a 19”+ bear with good fur. The big ones at my bait right now are good enough for me. Some guys are looking for a 20” bear and some are wanting one much bigger at 21” or even 22”.

Just like deer hunters, some guys are after 160’s, some are after 140’s, and some want anything with a rack.

Weight doesn’t mean much to us up here. We like inches and the Americans like the lbs. That goes for fish as well.

Thanks bucksnbears!

We have a Fall season here. State is divided into several Zones. You have to apply for either a kill permit or a Preference Point. It depends on which Zone you want to hunt in how many Preference Points it will take to get a kill permit. I used to keep track of all that but I think it takes around 10-12 Preference Points for some of the more desirable northern Zones. I may be wrong on number of Points but I know it is a lot of Points...and years for those Zones.

Last time I hunted I was about 50 miles NE of me and it only took about 4 Points. I had a guy over there baiting for me. I hunted out of a ground blind. On the 4th day of not seeing anything, as it was getting into evening, I saw a big black blob coming through the brush toward the bait. Got ready and it stepped out in the open broadside about 35 yards away. It was a really nice bear and I said under my breath "That's a shooter." and put the red dot on it. Then I remembered the guy doing the baiting said there was a sow with cubs in the area and it looked like a sow so I held off. Sure as can be three black bowling balls came out of the brush to the bait. Ma was nervous and stomping her feet, then 2 of the cubs started heading toward my blind. I muttered "Let's not do this." and they headed back to the bait. Eventually all three left and the last little guy got up on his hind feet and scratched his back on the way out. It was worth the price of admission to see that. Did not kill a bear that year.

We very rarely see any color variations here. I have heard of some but have never seen one alive.

Lots of Dark Eyed Junco’s and Blue Jays flying around. Squirrels are chattering up a storm and I hear Trumpeter Swans in the distance.

Never bothered me walking out. Bears are plenty skittish of everything. You can’t get out of the woods without one hearing you no matter how quiet you try to be, if they are in that close. They will “make” you and fade back. Why not, the bait will still be there and they will hit it shortly after when they feel safe. My cameras have shown it a hundred times and then some.

The only trouble I’ve had was taking bait in in the daytime, sows and cubs being the issue.

Had a bear recently that would always come in just after the hunter left no matter what. Back 300 yards from the bait on an old grassy logging trail that had to be used to walk in was a light bear trail crossing. On a whim I put a camera there. This bear was coming out about an hour before dark sniffing that trail, away from the bait, obviously checking for scent more recent than the mornings baiting trip. That dictated when he would eat.
Next night I set the guy up on that trail instead of the bait. and he shot the terrific boar. That bear had played the game before.
I’m positive the bear after smelling the hunters approach just laid back and listened for the hunter to leave.

Yep, one way to up your odds of this issue is have two people go in and then one guy leaves and one stays.

Re: 2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 05/01/24 12:55 PM

Out here, seems the deeper you go the braver they are. Back when we had an Argo, they’d just step into the bush a few feet and watch when we tried to get them to leave. Sometimes the odd one wouldn’t even leave the bait. Yelling, waving, throwing stuff at it. Sometimes you filled the tag early on a bear you really didn’t want to shoot, but usually we’d make our other buddy that doesn’t hunt much use his tag….lol
Need an Argo just to navigate our municipal roads never mind getting deep in the bush! I was behind a mini van pulling out of your driveway on the weekend, looked like she bottomed out hard a couple times just west of your place….lol.

Yep, one way to up your odds of this issue is have two people go in and then one guy leaves and one stays.

In some cases. If you read the issue, doing that would have only exasperated the situation. Remaining early day scent did not trigger the bear however picking up any scents left later in the day in that tall grass was enough to keep him off. Running two people across that trail later day, one of them twice would have come to nothing.
I like someone else on this forum have been working bears heavily since the 80’s. I don’t know it all, but I’ve learned plenty.

We all give a 4 1/2 year old Buck a lot credit for how smart they are. Now think about a 15 year old bear at the bait. They no what’s going on! I’m sure I’ve had exactly what Osky described happen to me before.

Re: 2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 05/01/24 06:33 PM

If possible, I always try to go to the bait site after dark to retrieve my hunter. I jingle my car keys, whistle or make noise to drive the bear off the bait from a good ways out. You don't want to startle one right at the bait and you don't want that bear seeing you climb down out of your stand.

I've baited sites many times after dark doing the same thing. As long as they don't feel compromised right at the bait it doesn't hurt a thing.

Same here, I like to walk to the base of the tree to get my guide clients. It's better to have a bear bumped from the area by someone walking in, than it is to have the bear see you getting out of the tree. Plus it is downright shocking how many people will get out of the stand 15 minutes before dark because they get scared. Really makes it difficult when people wreck a bait that way. Just because you do not see a bear doesn't mean there is not one close. Most baits have bears casing the joint for half an hour before dark.

I'm the opposite. I like to get out and want others to do the same when it's still early light enuff to see. Not pitch dark.
Have seen to many people shoot poo bears and make bad hits in the last 5 minutes.

Re: 2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 05/01/24 08:08 PM

Yesterday legal shooting light ended at 9:12pm. I climbed down the stand at 9:01pm. It wasn’t cause I was scared, but it’s pretty dark in the Spruce tree’s compared to an open area with a sunset in the background.
I feel if a bear did start to come in where I could see it, it’s pretty much 100% certain I wouldn’t have gotten a shot off by the time the bear got to the barrels and presented a perfect shot.

I’m not filming my hunts, otherwise that would be another issue. But like Bucksnbears said, lowlight equals poor shot placement.

The only way I would sit to the very last minute is if there was a shooter already at the barrel or working its way in and I was getting ready to shoot it.

I didn’t see anything or hear anything coming in, and with only 11 minutes left of legal light I figured sneaking out then was better than sneaking out with a bear 30 yards away with 2 minutes of light and it pretty much being pitch black.

To each their own though.

Too many people having never taken a bear shoot the first one that shows up at a bait. Typically around 4:30 p.m. and it's usually a juvenile bear as these stats show. This guy came in just about the time you climb down.

Re: 2024 Spring Black Bear Season - 05/01/24 10:21 PM

A buddy and I did a remote river hunt using a motorized canoe. Tim dropped me off in the early afternoon with plans to motor in after dark to pick me up. Fairly early into the hunt I heard water splashing in the stream behind me and I assumed it was a beaver. A short time later I glanced back and saw a bear moving through behind me.

It was pretty slow going from that point on until just about dark. I had about ten minutes of good light left when I saw a big bear come in from directly behind the bait. I was twenty or twenty-five feet up in a big spruce. I should have had my bow in hand but I'd left it hanging beside me on the tree. Surprised, I moved too quickly and the bear spotted me, swapped direction and went tearing out of there. I could hear its feet pounding the ground as it went.

Shortly after dark, Tim came motoring in just as planned. I could see his headlamp as he made his way in and all of a sudden he started yelling and swearing. Unbeknownst to me, that bear had come back and didn't want to leave. He was right there on the ground with it twenty yards away.

That feeder reminds me of a three holer croc pot. lol. I know nothing about bear hunting, not sure I've ever seen one actually. Whats the idea with these feeders? Small hole to keep them around longer getting at the bait I guess right? Makes sense. Why a three holer? Just more bait I guess? 3 varieties even probably. Are those three 55 gallon drums welded together? How the heck does that support a bear walking on them like a tight rope? The horizontal trees lashed are blocking to keep them on the one side or you kind of give them a perch to eat out of the honey hole on? Interesting. I might have to go shoot a bear somewhere. Good post. Nice pics. Isn't there a slam for all the diff color phases of bear? Aren't there like 5 diff ones? Looks like the one ol boy is about there or is that complete?

Are those three 55 gallon drums welded together? How the heck does that support a bear walking on them like a tight rope? The horizontal trees lashed are blocking to keep them on the one side or you kind of give them a perch to eat out of the honey hole on? Interesting. I might have to go shoot a bear somewhere. Good post. Nice pics. Isn't there a slam for all the diff color phases of bear? Aren't there like 5 diff ones? Looks like the one ol boy is about there or is that complete?

Lol a 3 holed croc pot is right!
grin

I’ll see if I can answer all your questions. The idea of having 3 barrels welded together and anchored to the tree is so I control where the bear stands and presents me a shot. Also I get some really cool pics of bears.

A hole in each barrel at the top of the barrel like mine prevents the bears from scooping all the food out onto the ground easily. They need to scoop upward and takes a while to get a belly full.

Some guys will put a hole at the bottom of the barrel, and we know how gravity works. So now their 30, 40, 50 gallon barrel is only capable of holding 10 gallons of bait, and the bears have it spread all over the ground the first time they come in.

I like 3 barrels welded together because it holds a good amount of food. There’s a lot of bears coming into the baits and I don’t want to run out of food or need to bait often. 3 barrels also gives length to chain up against the trees like I have.

I call these 50 gallon barrels. They might actually be 55 gallon.

The logs on one side of the barrel are to prevent the bears from feeding on that side of the barrel. A bear could come in and stand there for 2 hours and eat then leave and never give me a shot.

I think Bernie has shot all 4 color variants of the black bear.

Many big bear won't climb...Hunters have to go in and try to get a shot in all that commotion....it's a huge adrenaline rush!!

Ask Clay Creech about head shootin' a biggun at near point blank range in these southeast Georgia swamps with hounds on one end of the bear and him on the other end...the end with teeth.....

Notice the cave in the pic? That bear came out it at the distance of a couple crew cab pickups parked bumper to bumper from where I was standing. Came as a complete surprise to both of us. It was right at the edge of the saltwater and the bear didn't have many options to retreat. Neither did I.

I've told this story before. My first instinct was to throw my gun at it and run.

I found out I had a barrel of chicken feed and a barrel of quail feed still at home. So I brought in another barrel to each bait.

This bear made me laugh! Standing on the log on its tippy toes lol.

This bear getting ready to climb up the barrel.

These smaller bears have some beautiful fur coats!!

More bears are starting to show up at the bait now. Took longer than I thought, but it’s a new bait, so it’s normal.
More than one big one here too! They’ll start coming during daylight as more bears keep showing.
