Mando welcome to Canada, our gas has been 5$ a US gallon size for some time.
Ever wonder why they got ride of pennies in Canada.

Cause gas stations always put 0.9 cents on their last figure, if it was a penny they could not charge it.

Everyone benefits from a basic economics class. Demand rises and, unless supply increases, prices will rise. It is a lot easier, and more fun, to just complain about than to actually understand what is happening.

It's not just summer demand. There is quite a bit of unrest on the other side of the pond which some of you have hears about.
I know they haven't slowed down on drilling in ND. New pad 1/2 mile to the southeast. Fracking new wells a mile to the west.
$5.00 a gallon would be a great price in Nome.

Be happy you don't live on the left coast. Around here it's about as close to $5 a gallon as you can get, at most gas stations. The Indian reservation stations are selling it for about 50 cent cheaper. The only good news is that diesel is now about 20 cents cheaper than gas.

The point is, In some places, $5 a gallon would be a significant drop in price.

I understand that, wasn’t meant to be a shot at anyone. Just a general statement about the realities of daily life in America, or at least the vast majority of I guess. I’ve been to Alaska twice, bar none the most beautiful place on earth, but the cost of living there is considerable. Probably why it is still so pristine and not polluted with all the scum the rest of the nation is…. I will say that Anchorage seems to be filling up pretty quickly with the trash from my previous visit 20 years ago.

Oil production is dropping in the US and will continue to drop in the US through 2024, will not see 2023 output till 2025. Price is going up and will continue this summer till winter blend comes on line this fall. At that time the Pres. will claim his policies are working.

Re: 5 dollars for a gallon of gas - 04/10/24 01:51 PM

Oil production in the USA has not dropped. We're the number one oil producer in the world and we pumped more oil in 2023 than any country in history. 12.9 million barrels a day. So as unfriendly to the oil industry as Biden is hasn't slowed production.

Re: 5 dollars for a gallon of gas - 04/10/24 02:37 PM

It's down compared to last year on the increase per day but overall production is the highest it's ever been.

I live in the middle of the oil patch and it's business 24/7. The new pad to our southeast was started with snow on the ground. Two dozers spent a couple days pushing snow, then started ripping frozen ground so the scrapers could get to work.

China and India have plans to build and continue to operate more coal fired power plants than the rest of the world combined. With the U.S. producing less carbon based power it'll be interesting to see what kind of energy shortages we have in North America in the near future. Will North America and Europe making the sacrifice in energy production of fossil fuels make a difference to global warming? Will wind and solar make up the difference for those committed to making this sacrifice? How this will affect our standard of living goes unsaid. Are we all willing to use and have less food, comfortable shelter, more expensive, less reliable transportation? Can we overcome all this and maintain a standard of living we have become accustomed to? 4x4 trucks, big homes, lights and electricity when we want it? All unanswered questions. Our government plans to end the purchase of all gas powered vehicles by 2034, how will that affect taxes?

The key question to ask is why gas was so much cheaper in 2020 and now it is so much higher since then.

What caused this doubling of gas prices comparatively?

Serious discussion here.

Re: 5 dollars for a gallon of gas - 04/11/24 03:43 PM

The gas prices were low in 2020 and the oil companies were losing their arses due to a temporary large reduction in demand in 2020. You are welcome.

Covid lockdowns in 2020 caused crude oil prices to plummet, that caused some of the low gas prices.

My VW Jetta just got pulled out of the weeds and a new set of tires put on. I put 18k miles on my Tacoma last year which is about 4k in gas. I can save about 1.5k if I put my around town miles on the jetta vs the truck. Thats not adding in value saved keeping miles off the truck vs a 1000 dollar car.

I do the same. I have a Subaru Forester, gets 28-30 mpg. It sees about 22,000 miles a year. I have a 2500 Chevy, gets 13 mpg. I only drive it when I have to tow or haul something. I put about 8,000 miles a year on it. Everything on that truck costs 2-3 times what the Suby does…brakes, rotors, tires, etc.

"WASHINGTON/LONDON/DUBAI (Reuters) - As the United States pressed Saudi Arabia to end its oil price war with Russia, President Donald Trump gave Saudi leaders an ultimatum.
In an April 2 phone call, Trump told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that unless the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) started cutting oil production, he would be powerless to stop lawmakers from passing legislation to withdraw U.S. troops from the kingdom, four sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
The threat to upend a 75-year strategic alliance, which has not been previously reported, was central to the U.S. pressure campaign that led to a landmark global deal to slash oil supply as demand collapsed in the coronavirus pandemic - scoring a diplomatic victory for the White House.
Trump delivered the message to the crown prince 10 days before the announcement of production cuts. The kingdom’s de facto leader was so taken aback by the threat that he ordered his aides out of the room so he could continue the discussion in private, according to a U.S. source who was briefed on the discussion by senior administration officials.
The effort illustrated Trump’s strong desire to protect the U.S. oil industry from a historic price meltdown as governments shut down economies worldwide to fight the virus. It also reflected a telling reversal of Trump’s longstanding criticism of the oil cartel, which he has blasted for raising energy costs for Americans with supply cuts that usually lead to higher gasoline prices. Now, Trump was asking OPEC to slash output."

Certainly does if you can get Saudi Arabia to cut production to increase oil prices.

Like when everyone was complaining about 4 dollar rats way back when, people will soon wish gas was only 5 dollars a gallon when the middle east war escalates.
And not only the price of gas but everything else associated with The resulting increased cost of moving trade and domestic goods.
Shelves will be empty.Even if you have money things just wont be available.
