I almost gave up hope after the first half. They are going to half to play a full 40 minutes to beat SC.

Why because theres's no sec teams left? (don't matter women's sports are subpar) or maybe they can drive a boat at night and not run over a log clown?

So sloppy I went to bed at halftime! Glad they won but the next game is gonna be ugly.

South Carolina is really tough. Clark will need to hit her outside shots better than she did with Uconn.

Should be a good game.

Officiating is really bad in women's basketball. Really bad.

Re: Good job. Hawkeyes! - 04/06/24 12:36 PM

It wasn't always a pretty game but a win is a win. Like Caitlin said, you can't expect their offense to be perfect every game. 40 more minutes! Go Hawks!!

It sure is but I couldn't do any better....my eyes just can't keep up with the pace. Some of the fouls/nonfouls are borderline assault!

Re: Good job. Hawkeyes! - 04/06/24 02:00 PM

South Carolina is good, strong, big and deep. Iowa will need to be able to hit from outside to limit rebounds and open up the middle. Yukon only suited up 8 players due to a season long series of injuries. Martin did a good job hitting some short jumpers.

You are so misinformed. Please don't show your ignorance so blatantly on a subject you know nothing about! First South Carolina is an SEC team !!!!.
Second it's obvious you don't know crap about basketball or you wouldn't say the womens teams are subpar.

Re: Good job. Hawkeyes! - 04/06/24 02:16 PM

I'm not sure but I think I was the first one to bring attention on here to IOWA and Catlin Clark few months back. It was when she was closing in on the scoring record. That's when I stated I had been watching her since last years NCAA tourney.
Iowa as a team looks NOTHING like the other teams . NOT one "manly" girl on there. I mentioned back some time they are going to have a tough time once they get down to the final 4. Iowa is missing an amazon looking big butted girl inside. BUT if they hit their 3 point shots they can beat anyone.....

Naw the big 10 guys were talking about her last year. Of course they usually don't have much to get excited about except the sport of two guys rolling around on top of each other.

You are kidding right ? Oh wait you are counting back in 1915 and until 1965. Better not google championships by conference. You will cry. You see back in the 30's-70's lot of your champs played 6 games and the rich racist politicians declared the champ. Take you a little math skills. Even with your sacred wrestling you r big 10 will come up short in TOTAL championships. Noy only did the Big ten form before the SEC ,Most of the schools established even earlier. BUT GUESS what sec has 1 more Football chip than the big 10 even with a head start BUT enough of that this thread is about the IOWA girls team .....

Re: Good job. Hawkeyes! - 04/06/24 05:15 PM

I have been watching womens college bball this year for the first time. We raised two athletic girls so we watched a lot of high school sports but not college and I don't watch professional sports of any kind except for football. I have been very impressed with the womens college game. My wifes family is from Iowa so we started with them and have branched out to other teams. They shoot and hit from unbelievable distances, have a quick release and are always hustling. They also seem to have more fun and display better sportsmanship then the men. The officiating is horrible, some of the noncalled fouls would leave the men crying on the floor. The only deficiency I have noticed is leg strength, they seem to fall more. I enjoy watching them and will continue to do so even after Clark and this crop of stars are done. I sometimes feel sorry for the girls when the old, fat has beens are saying they are men because they are masculine in looks. I am pretty sure most of us aren't male models.

I hope Iowa takes South Carolina to the cleaners. Several have mentioned about the poor officiating, I think Iowa has benefited the most from what I've seen.

If you look back at Iowa/LSU last year, Iowa seemed to of got the bad end of officiating for that championship game. Iowa more than likely would of been past champion.

Talent level has increased noticeably as of late, particularly ball handling skills. It may also be because the women actually play basketball, rather than just stand around waiting for someone to jack up threes like men's basketball. For me, the NBA is unwatchable. They don't even play defence anymore. They stand around waiting for someone to miss a jacked up three.

Re: Good job. Hawkeyes! - 04/07/24 12:39 AM

I was surprised when I read Clark's starting salary in the WNBA would be around 79K. Of course there would be endorsements and such, but that sure does not seem like much money.

Re: Good job. Hawkeyes! - 04/07/24 12:41 AM

thats why the dude was playing basketball in russia during the wnba off season. WNBA needs to take a page out of the old roller derby play book and only put the crowd on one side of the court so it at least makes it look full.

I think the top end of wnba was 300k-500k

She's making more in college with NIT at around $3 million plus .
So maybe the salary will get better for all of them , once she turns pro.
Have to admit , watching them play is more exciting and more action than the NBA.

I see Sundays game is on national TV , be interesting to see just how many watch the game.
Should be a lot more than watch it on ESPN!

This is sad I just read that Gabbie Marshall received hate postings on her social media so she deleted her account, here's a link.

Re: Good job. Hawkeyes! - 04/07/24 02:11 AM

I dont get the hate thing on Gabbie...I'm on a few basketball official facegroup groups, as I am a high school official and local chapter rules official. There was a few members there that were downright nasty about it. There was a hashtag campaign going against her barely after the game ended accusing her of flopping.

Record-Breaking 14.2 Million Viewers Watch Caitlin Clark and Iowa's Final Four Basketball Win.
Bet there's more viewers for this game than there would of been on ESPN.

Yeah I just watched the last four minutes of the game again on YouTube and replayed the call and the UConn player stepped over to make the screen and as far as I've always known that's illegal, but if I'm wrong tell me so I know for future reference.

Thats one of the more blatant illegal screens you'll ever see. The elbow isnt so much of a problem but it probably is what put it over the top for the official. Only screen more blatant is the ones where a screener runs up from behind a defender and doesnt stop before contact is made(screens from outside the screened player must allow for at least one step).

Yeah there are a lot of screens where a screener leans out a bit that arent called, usually because they whiffed the defender or the contact isnt enough to cause a disadvantage to the defender.
Posted By: Nittany Lion

Re: Good job. Hawkeyes! - 04/07/24 07:24 AM

There are many illegal screens in the course of any given game. Officials overlook most of them. I think UCoon got called for a total of 4 in that game, Iowa did not get called for any. The UConn coach said they would have to do a better job of disguising their screens in the future, lol. He was not using that as an excuse for their loss, pretty much a class guy.
Posted By: BernieB.

Re: Good job. Hawkeyes! - 04/07/24 12:26 PM

The screen was a foul, you can't really argue that. I was surprised they called it at that point in the game. Official tend to swallow their whistles in the last 30 seconds of close games and let the players battle it out.

If it had happened at any other point in the game, no one would be saying a thing about it.

Last year's national championship game was officiated horribly and left a bad feel about the outcome because poor officiating had way too much influence over the outcome of the game. I hope this year is much better officiated.

Would have liked for Caitlan Clark to have gone out with a national championship, but she's not diminished one bit, a true great for all time.

Considering Iowa put SC out of the tournament last year, it's no surprise they wanted Iowa like no other.

Fitting that Iowa beat LSU in the final last year, Iowa beat SC in the final 4 last year, made for some great games period .
By the way viewer ship was the highest ever !
For the third time in seven days, Clark and the Hawkeyes shattered the TV viewership record for women’s college basketball, this time their NCAA championship final loss to undefeated South Carolina Sunday on ABC drawing 18.7 million viewers, according to ESPN.
