Refrigerator until in use, then on the countertop or table. It don’t last long once the 1/4# Pat is in the butter dish.

Salted butter, you can leave it sit out. Unsalted butter will mold in a couple days if it isn’t refrigerated. Salt acts as a preservative.

Exactly! Butter is left on the counter in a container.

Once in use it can stay out if used in good time. Keeping a lot of butter out for longer periods of time it can get rancid. Another way to have "soft" butter is to buy the stuff with canola oil mixed in, that spreads easily. I have been using unsalted butter lately as I don't need the sodium in my diet.

We operate the same way. Butter that stays at the cabin keeps fine, covered with no refrigeration.

If you cant spread it ,what good is it, on the counter beside the katsup and mustard. If butter spoils, you aint usin it right.

I guess I eat a lot more butter than most here as I leave the whole pound on the table and use it in a week or two the rest is either in the refrigerator or in the freezer.

We've got about 50 pounds in the freezer. Keep a few pounds in the fridge and a pound out for every day use.

Unsalted butter will go rancid much quicker left out than salted butter.
