New Truck Input

New Truck Input - 03/28/24 01:19 PM

I know trucks are OVERPRICED and the older ones are better.

That being said,

Prices and interest rates are starting to drop low and most of y'all know dealers aren't moving trucks like they used to.

I am in the market for a new truck, but it seems like all these new trucks have issues.

1. 2024 Tundra--I do not like the V6 engine in the truck and have read about people needing their engines replaced and their trucks dying. Made in America.

2. 23/24 F150 with the 5.0 engine--I've heard their 5.0 engine is bulletproof, but I have heard the Fords have many other known issues.

3. GMC 1500 3.0 Diesel--haven't heard too many bad things about this engine. I read one review where his engine went out and they replaced it with a REFURBISHED engine.

Anyone have any of these trucks or are mechanics who have worked on these trucks? What are your thoughts?

I can't help with what to buy

my dad and son have the Ford 5.0 in a 2011 and 2013 and both like it

what I will say is Fluid Film even though you are in GA I would say get it done

it is a lot of investment to watch get rust

I can't help you either. It goes against my financial principles. However, if you want a new truck, you'll have a warranty, so no need to worry?

Re: New Truck Input - 03/28/24 04:46 PM

I recently bought a 2018 Toyota Tundra. I was all set to buy a new one and started building it online until I couldn’t find the V8 option. I researched the twin turbo V6’s and they are impressive on paper. More power and torque than my beloved 5.7 which I still consider a half million mile motor. But they have had lots of issues, especially the first year they came out with them which was 2022 I believe. That put me off of buying a new Tundra.

I started doing my homework, and soon realized that GM has been producing junk for many years. They have lots of known problems and they refuse to address them. Instead, they sometimes simply change the name of the system and just keep pushing it on the public. I own and have owned lots of older GM’s, but I won’t be buying any newer ones.

Ford and their 5.0 and their bigger one, a 6.2 I believe, looked pretty good and that became my second choice in a used pick up.

I never even considered Dodge, owned several, will never own another.

In the end I went with the Tundra with a 5.7 like my old one. My last tundra was a 2008 that I bought new in 2009 and ran for 100,000 miles. I hauled tons of construction equipment with it and used it to tow, my backhoe, a combined tractor/trailer weight of about 9,000 pounds. I had zero mechanical issues with it. That kind of reliability makes an impression.

I would’ve liked to get an even newer one, a 2020 or 2021, but folks were asking $40,000 and up for those and I refuse to pay that for a used pick up.

The 2018 Tundra I bought only had 53,000 miles on it and the frame was super clean, no rust at all. Even after three months of looking, I still think I paid too much, but it was $2,000 to $3,000 below market value.

I believe most of the big auto manufacturers will be eliminating their V-8’s in order to comply with EPA regulations

I would strongly consider one of the last year v8 tundra if your willing to go slightly used.

Re: New Truck Input - 03/28/24 06:15 PM

I’ve been giving a new truck some though but after looking around I can’t come up anything worth what they want for it, if they did reduce the price I still would not want what they offer. The new Tacoma trucks are all 4 cylinders now I can’t imagine trying to tow anything with that 4 banger turbo or not. My V6 loses a few MPG driving a gallon of milk home. LOL In 2018 I had a bunch of options and packages to pick from when building a Tacoma on line now they pick the limited options and none are useful but a lot of shinny useless stuff they will add on.

Not many if any real off-road vehicles being made today to choose from just endless 4 door cowboy Cadillac types. A 4X4 off- road today comes with useless gadgets and highway tires marked M/S on the sidewalls.

I have done the same. I run them until the warrantee runs out and then replace them. I got a 24 in November and have 6,000 miles on it so far.

I have had two F-150 Super Crews with the 3.5L Ecoboost and have been pleased with both of them (Nothing Eco about them if you have a heavy foot). I get a new one every 7 years and will be in the market for a new one next year to go into retirement with a new low mileage truck. I am torn between another F150 with the 3.5 or a Tundra. The market is definitely getting better with alot more inventory on the lots.

If you buy Chevys, you about have to cash out the minute they are off warranty. Wind-up Hotwheels cars have more reliable transmission than GM.

It was discovered that the Drawing Compound .
( lube sprayed on the sheet metal to assist the metal flow as it was formed to the draw die ).
Did in fact hamper the paint's adherence to the metal outer body panels after a prolonged time.
I believe their wash stations were contaminated.

I ended up purchasing a 2009 Silverado 4x4 with 5.3 -V8
extremely low mileage (45k)
I've had it a couple of months and am happy with it so far.

Previous truck was a 2005 Tacoma ( 245,000) when I gifted it to my Grandson.

At 71 yrs old I just couldn't justify the new truck costs.

I'm on my second f-150 with the 3.5 eco boost. Put over 100,000 on the first. 20,000 on the one I drive now. NO problems. Tow my son's 21 foot Lund or his loaded 16 ft cargo trailer with no issues except bad gas mileage. 11 with a trailer 18 around town.

Lol....I had a '89 F-150 LWB 2WD. I bought it from the original owner.

It had the infamous silver paint that peeled. The orginal owner had Ford repaint the truck when it was 3 years old , Ford paid for the paint job.
I got the truck when it was 11 years old. The second coat of paint was peeling....lol

I bought a chevy in 2022. Had a 2014 and a 2011. Love them. BUT I like the interior on the GMC better than the Silverado. GMC has knobs to turn for controls. Chevy has push buttons . Hard to see what your turning on without readers... LOL

Wife drives a 2016 F150 with 2.7 motor...almost 100k miles and only issue was a leaky oil pan. Truck gets 21 mpg and is great in the mountains. Tows the tritoon great too, but the fuel use goes way up.
Bought a new F350 7.3 gas motor last year. Very impressed with it for now. Time will tell.

Re: New Truck Input - 03/29/24 12:24 PM

The 3.0 diesel in the chevy gets really good fuel mileage. A buddies dad had one that got around 30 mpg on the highway. Dont know much about them except that the oil pump is belt driven and requires replacement around 100k miles. The kicker however is the belt is on the rear on the engine so it requires the transmission to be removed to replace it.

Re: New Truck Input - 03/29/24 12:27 PM

All the manufacturers had paint issues at one time or another. Usually related to production changes like water based paints or undercoats. I have a 99 Chevy (white) that the paint is peeling from primer. Primer adhesion isn’t an issue though.
Ford had similar as did Dodge at one time or another.
It was less common on the imports but they were slower to abandon high lead paint .

Running a 2017 F350, gas. 0 troubles 154,000 so far only battery's tires and oil changes. tows nice, a little high in the bed but I make it work. I dont like the diesels too heavy get stuck too easy in snow on backroads.

We just got some new F250s for the fleet, and I can't touch the floor of the bed at all, even on my tippy toes. They come from the factory with a little step at the front of the bed.

Re: New Truck Input - 03/29/24 01:25 PM

Maybe with the reduction in V8s the mini trucks will make a comeback I think they would sell the heck out of them. I never understood how it was a good idea to stop making them but still pump out millions of V8s and V10s when gas was at its highest prices it made no practical sense.

My 21 Ranger is getting gas in the oil. Dealer is looking into problem.

Re: New Truck Input - 03/29/24 01:45 PM

Mini trucks didn’t really shine mpg wise. I drove many of them over the years. Toyota , S-10, Isuzu, never did stoop so low as driving a Ranger .

Maybe see 20mpg on tar.

My Suburban does 18 and my K1500 V-6 typically 21mpg on Highway.

Almost certainly the high pressure fuel pump. It's inside the engine, under the valve cover, and runs off the cam. When they leak the gas goes directly into the crankcase. Chevy had a big problem with them on their 4 cylinders. On some it was so bad that the gas fumes being sucked back into the air intake through the PCV system would cause the engine to run rich enough to set a code and turn the check engine light on.

If I were looking for a half ton truck, I would be searching for a low mile used tundra with the V8 about 5 years old that is either for sale by owner or at a new car dealership that was a trade in. Never set foot on a used car dealership.

As a trapping rig the convenience of working out of it easier would be #1 that would come first to mileage in my case. I agree I had a Nissan that got terrible milage for a 4 banger.

I’m a GMC 1500 guy but gas burners not the diesel. I really like the 5.3 liter.
The ‘16 I had was a great truck no issues whatsoever. My new ‘22 (well, I bought it new at start of ‘23) has been awesome. The technology is pretty cool, pulls our boat like a dream, and the screen is nice, big, easy to use.
This past winter got to break it in hauling a deer, then I used it for trapping. Worked for me.
Cab is comfy and has all the works. Seat heaters, steering wheel heated, and seat cooling options.

We have had a couple Equinox the the high pressure pump leaked so bad that the engine would "diesel" after (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) off like an old carburetor motor from all the gas in the crankcase.

I am driving a 21 Sierra with a 5.3l. Not a fancy truck just a higher optioned work truck. Only issue I have had was the strech style serpentine belt failed at 37k miles. Have 40k on it right now and other than tires and oil changes its been problem free.

Re: New Truck Input - 03/29/24 08:24 PM

Anyone looking for a new vehicle should Google with a question like:

Owners complaints about a Chevy Silverado. Include the year.

Almost every vehicle on the road has an Owners Forum website. You'll find loads of info on those.

Also, search for any independent repair guy that fixes warranty work the dealership can't fix.

You'll be amazed at how many things are wrong with most trucks or other vehicles.

Do your research.

I have a 2015 f150 with the 2.7 in it.
Looks like the day we drove it home from the dealer.
Used it to pull an 8x20 cargo trailer (4000 lbs) loaded with a 570 quad and a full size ranger 800 along with about a 100 beaver traps to Arkansas and back. Got 11 mpg.
If I ever update it will be the 3.5 or I'll step up to a 250.

Good trapping rig add a leaf to the back put it in low you can move a lot of firewood more than you think it would haul. Very easy to work out of its a beast.
