Acceptance locally North to South - 03/27/24 11:46 PM

How is it ,acceptance wise ; for a notherner that moved south for retirement?

My Wife and I are 3-4 years out but trying to figure it out.

you will be amazed how friendly everyone is. Nothern indiana was the rudest crap hole ive ever been in followed closely by Wisc and then MN. Plus ya'll don't have any food up there, why i'll never be north of the mason/dixon line again.

Re: Acceptance locally North to South - 03/27/24 11:51 PM

As long as you keep Minnesota's liberal politics in Minnesota, I don't think there would be any issue. However, you would still receive the title of (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) yankee. lol.

Come on down/ You'll never look back. We are friendly and accepting.

Re: Acceptance locally North to South - 03/27/24 11:57 PM

I used to go down South fairly often. People were more friendly. The big difference is that they weren't in a hurry and take the time to talk. This tremendously frustrates many people from big cities in the North Eastern down to New York and New Jersey. If I had to move out of Ohio, I would move to North Carolina.

I would stay away from areas full of North Eastern implants. They mostly suck.

We've been accepted by pretty much everyone we've dealt with. You will, as mentioned, get called a yankee, for life. I don't think most of the people down here would cotton to having a liberal for a neighbor, but if you're a conservative and don't come down here and try to change everything, you'll have zero problems.

Re: Acceptance locally North to South - 03/28/24 12:03 AM

I used to go to FL every winter for a month, I met as many people from MN, WI and MI as I did from FL it seemed. You really don't have to go far South to escape the weather, Iowa and Missouri have very mild winters compared to us.

This exactly. Don't be trying to change what has worked for as long as we can remember and we'll get along just fine.

Yes, you'll always be a yank but it's up to you if you're one of the good one's or not. And we'll bend over backwards to give you the benefit of the doubt unless proven otherwise.

One tip, slow down and be willing to pull up a chair and set a spell. We ain't in no hurry and consider it rude to always be rushing off somewhere and unable to give the time of day.

Re: Acceptance locally North to South - 03/28/24 12:21 AM

Good tip, Warrior. Any time I'm down south it helps to remember to not be in a hurry!
I've always enjoyed myself every time I've been in the South. Nice country and good people.

Re: Acceptance locally North to South - 03/28/24 12:49 AM

Food, we consider a good meal among friends to be of utmost importance. Please don't be offended if you're asked to bring ice and cups to the potluck. It's just that we know who can and can't and try to keep things just so.

Now that said most of us are willing to least whatever it is y'all yanks call food. Heck, we might even like it. We do eat froglegs, crawfish and pigs feet so we're willing. Just be careful at potlucks, best if someone can vouch for it.

And if you're a picky eater please don't make an issue of it. We respect each other's peculiarities as long as it's not an issue.

I went from the Canadian border to close to the Mexican border. Lived in south Texas for a decade and LOVED it. To this day I am amazed how accepting everyone was, and how comfortable I felt. Being a minority was interesting to say the least, but it was a positive experience. God willing, I will spend some time there when I retire.

Re: Acceptance locally North to South - 03/28/24 02:40 AM

When I lived on the coast, I had neighbors from Deleware, NJ, PA, and Ohio. Had to show them a lot of things they never knew, but they turned out to be good neighbors. We still keep in touch. All of us have moved elsewhere (to escape hurricanes and sea level rising).

The fellow from Ohio just joined my hunting club last year. We can't convince him to sit in a box stand. He wants to roam, which isn't safe or fair to others. He is learning.

Worst is a couple from Florida!

I think more people in the Naples , Ft Meiers area are retired from WI than local.

my parents live in Naples half the year , they have a condo in a big complex with a pool close enough to fishing and the beach , not far from a hospital , the are on the same power grid as the Hospital and while they weren't there for the Ft Meyers hurricane their neighbors who were said never even lost power being several miles inland.

my aunt and uncle don't have a place in FL but have so many friends that do they go take a month and go visit them and my parents.

Two kinds move down South:

1) Yankees
2) (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) Yankees!

Once you get here...try to remain the first kind.

In laws moved to Statesville, NC after retiring. Lived there 20 years. When they moved back north due to health, so family was close, one of his neighbors summed it up best, “You didn’t come down here and try to tell us how to do things.”

Also, trapped down south for 15 years. First year or two folks were kind of cautious, but after they got to know and trust us they were like family. And anyone new they told us about who needed a trapper was just as friendly right from the start. A recommendation from a friend or neighbor was all you needed to be welcomed into their families too.

People talk about southern hospitality but words can’t truly describe it.

I still remember my 1st week working in the oil field in east Texas. The crew I worked with said" why you working so fast, you gonna have a heart attack". And I said "when you grow up on a farm, you work fast to get all the work done" They laughed and said" this aint the farm".

Remove the horn from your car. If the car in front of you does not move immediately as the light turns green, just say to yourself, "bless his heart". It will be ok. If you're in a big hurry, leave early. Learn to pull over for fire trucks, police cars and funeral processions. Tractors have the right of way.

Re: Acceptance locally North to South - 03/28/24 02:30 PM

North/South can live together just fine if the mover wants to. There will be cultural differences, not good or bad just different.

Attitude is everything, don't buy a acre and think you own 200, don't think your neighbors property is your own recreational area.

Keep your dogs at home, don't shoot fireworks at 2 a.m, etc....Anyone can make it anywhere with respect & common sense.

you know it isn't any different in Rural WI

but from my moms comments driving with them when they were back 2 weeks ago Naples FL is a lot more like Chicago traffic than Rural WI.

She was like it is so relaxing to drive here compared to FL

Re: Acceptance locally North to South - 03/28/24 03:07 PM

I don't think anyone living in Orlando or within 10 miles of any coast is actually from Florida. They all came from somewhere else.....and brought their rules and driving habits with them.

When it comes to knowing when you are in the "south", best indication I can think of is grocery stores stock one or more different brands of grits other than Quaker quick grits. And restaurants will offer grits as an alternative to taters. And if you order ice tea, it will come sweet. You want unsweetened, you have to ask for it that way.

If I were moving, it would be north, not straight north though. NW most likely. There are things I'd like to see and do in the south but I wouldn't want to live there. If it never got above 60 degrees I'd be perfectly fine with it.

I'm with Boco on this. And I was born and raised in FLA. I knew where nautical north was when I was six. I will nevah live east of the divide, or further south than I am in the mountains. If I do move, it will be to Alaska. That's it.

Soft? You would wither away in August. Can always put on more cloths, even fur, to stay warm in winter. If you went naked down here in August you would still sweat like a woman of ill repute in church.

Florida is a nice state. Been there in winter and summer visiting the in laws when they were alive. Winter months were OK, but summers were unbearable. Year round residents don't go outside in the summer during the day. I could never live like that.

Law Dog, I don't think I'm allowed in Canada. I didn't take the jesus jab. He could come hang with me and I could get him on a crew doing metal roofing in the middle of summer. Fifteen minute break in the morning and afternoon with a 30 minute lunch. Will definitely get a tan.
As for winter, I've seen a native Alaskan shivering in 35 degree weather down in these parts. I was really surprised but he told me it felt about like -30 to him. Lol.

Being a darn yankee, I find the over the top niceness suspicious, lol, and apparently i'm not totally wrong. My daughter has lived and worked in several southern states and says there's a lot of passive aggressive "niceness" to decipher, especially with the women...

That's exactly what the californians do here. " This how we do it in California "

The first action they take when they get here is to join their HOA , then the school board , then the city council

Ain't really a thing since you pretty much can drive from Alabama to Kentucky in half a day including going through Nashville.

Now east to west is a different thing.
