Dog took off before the storms

Dog took off before the storms - 03/25/24 07:05 PM

Thought she was a goner but she showed up about 10AM today a few hours over 24 hrs I did not think the pampered mutt would have survived the wet cold temps but she looks good considering. Yotes would have an easy meal because she’s harmless. Checked her feet first thing they were not frozen when I felt them that was my main concern. She did not eat before taking off after a rabbit and when searching for her it seemed the rabbits came out ahead of the second storm that was rolling in. 32 degrees was not bad yesterday but down in the 20s last night maybe her fat helped her fight the cold.

She came in was dried off ate some food and flopped on the dog bed until I took her out at 1:30 then she flopped on the bed again and started snoring a short time later, she’s moving kind of slow not being in great shape she’s pretty stiff and stoved up.

Looks like she’s getting a tracking collar now with her being a hound she’s not to bright I think she was lucky this time with the temps not being subzero.

It will be interesting to see when this exhaustion wears off and how long it takes a chubby beagle to recover from being stupid.

Glad she found her way back home. Seems like I have heard that scenario pretty often with beagles. "noses with legs" my grandpa called them.

Glad she make it home ok, I've had a few that didn't end that well. Yep, the good collars are quite expensive and not practical to wear full time around the yard as they burn batteries. But for day hunts the Alpha is hard to beat.

We had one that was gone for 5 months! She went off hunting and didn't come home. I looked high and low for several weeks with no sign and figured she was gone for good. Five months later she was waiting for me in the yard when I came home. She had been living with someone for part of that time because she had a different collar on, but it had been a little while because she was skinny and a little beat up. I don't think she left our yard again for the rest of her life!

I asked Scheels why the only brand they carry is Garmin. The guy there said they were sick on all the returns of other brands. 750 bucks, but its been flawless using it daily when my gsp goes out.

Had a 2 year old lab gone for 36 hours.

My son drove everywhere looking for Louie.

Then like a Disney movie....about 5 miles from the house...on a long straight road..my son spotted something.

He stopped the truck and yelled for him...the Lab came towards him at 1/2 speed and jumped on my son.

This happened in the summah...but the dogs feet were so swollen ,he could barely walk.

He slept for 3 days...and nevah went missing again.

I had a bagle, beagle basset hound mix, at least with those little in turned legs you could run fast enough to catch up to him wen he got a sent.
got him when the kids were around 3,5,6
he would let the kids do about anything to him dress him up , put hats on him .he was just happy to have kids and a warm wood stove to lay in front of , pound dog they figured he was around 9 when we got him he made 14.

She got up to go out twice so far, I gave her some table scraps and fresh water. Wife gave her a dry bisect she would not eat it that was shocking told the wife she’s probably dehydrated so don’t feed her dry foods for a while.

She’s slowly getting her legs under her now less Zombie like when she returned.

We raised and trialed Beagles when I was a kid. Every once in a while when we had them up in the woods running bunnies, one would take off on a long trail. May have been deer. My Dad would lay a jacket or a shirt down at a crossroads nearby. It worked every time and they would be laying on the jacket or whatever the next morning.

My grandfather raised beagles.

He had one named Rebel. That thing lived up to it's name.

I think I was around 8 or 9 when he took off one January.

Grandpa looked high and low for him for about 4 weeks. Figured he had found a new home or had gotten killed somewhere.

Fast forward to August. I was at a local pond fishing. It was right along the Youghigheny River about 15 miles as the crow flies from grandpas house. I hear this dog baying on the hill on the other side of the river. Pretty shortly here he comes. Crosses the river and sits down next to me. I look at the collar and sure enough it ways Rebel on it with my grandpas phone no. on it.

I tied him to a tree with a couple metal stringers and waited for my mom to come get me. She pulled up and took one look at the dog and said ain't no way that things getting in my car. She said she'd call him to come get him.

That dog got put on a long lead any time he went hunting. For how long it was gone he didn't look too bad.

3 weeks later his female took off. He told me to go fishing again.

That dog was never found. But a neighbor down the road about 2 miles got a new beagle about 3 months later.

Been hunting Beagles since 12 years old. The one I just bought is going to be a handful. I can tell. She likes to run with my wifes Great Dane and keeps up with her.
