Vegas review first timer - 03/22/24 02:15 PM

Loud very loud my country ears felt like they were going to bleed at times I could not stand it and that’s inside and on Fremont street outdoors it seems bid noise is a big thing there.

Better ventilation than our local casinos less sinus issues but still smoky at times. The smell of pot outside on the street and in the elevators common but not crazy. The pounding music had the same impact on your head no pot needed.

Food was expensive by my commoner standards $3 water, $4.50 coffee, $3-$4.50 per donut, Subway 1 sandwich 1 wrap and a drink no chips $25, $10 prime rib with baked potato and mixes vegetables was thin but tasty.

Cab ride $35-45 for 10 mile drive. $60 with tip

Homeless people were hard to find they must of cleaned them out of the casino areas still the usual crazies, cons and hustlers where people gather but hotel security was impressive in dealing with them. Seen them clean out a few undesirable ones. I did have one meth head woman working the casino looking for whatever that tried to hit me up twice I never asked. Beggar or hooker I just blew her off both times if she can afford $15 for cigarettes she must be doing OK.

Airbus plane ride was a very smooth ride compare to other smaller planes I’ve been on it was quiet and more stable.

Rooms were cheap nothing fancy but secure the elevators needed a room key to go to rooms to keep people from cruising the hallways looking for trouble.

Slots were nothing special actually they seemed to have lower payouts often with sperts of better payouts at times. Lots of dead play more than I expected for a gambling town famous for gambling. Spent 3 days there and never witnessed any hand pays being given out. I found that very telling of the poor big win situation in Vegas. Even the winner’s circle photos were low payouts for what they posting very low for Vegas expectations.

Not overwhelming impressive to me either it’s a lot like Chicago really in many ways now I can say I’ve been there. No way I’d pay to go there again just no real incentive to go back but it was an experience.

Was there once maybe 15-16 yrs ago. Not my jam.

I'm not a gambler. Lots of people watching out there.

Had more fun renting a car and checking out Hoover Dam.

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/22/24 02:35 PM

No doubt, there were a lot of homeless there in 2012, no weed smell then though.

Enjoyed Freemont St. (Old Vegas) Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Mob Museum the most...But the modern strip & casinos, not so much.

Weird how they corral you through those casinos, with little option for sidewalk walking.

Been there once about 10 years ago, it was a hole then, and I imagine it's no better now. I really don't know what the fascination is, that people have with the place?

I was there in April 1976.Back then most food was free to get you into the casinos. We got married in the Chapel of the Pines inside Circus Circus casino. $29.95 including 1 wedding picture and a bag of toiletries. There was an organist, minister that they paged while he was playing the slots and a floor sweeper they recruited as a witness. Best gamble I ever made. Still married to the same wonderful woman. Haven't been back since.

That is awesome! I'd wager most Vegas weddings don't last 48 years!
The only thing that could make your story better is if the minister was Elvis. grin

If I had a brother in jail and a brother in Las Vegas, I’d get the brother outta Vegas first.

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/22/24 03:08 PM

seems like every major city now reeks of weed

was down on the Mile in Chicago last year and people just smoking a joint in the open

wife and kid were in NYC last summer same thing people openly smoking weed.
kids first impression after getting off the train was the city smelled like weed and urine and they weren't very impressed by that.

you smell it ever once in a while in MKE but it is still illegal in WI

Most of the buffets closed down for Covid and haven’t reopened yet they said. I did a lot of research before going there the maps are weird they make them tough to read and figure the layout. If you look at one hotel the expand the map it disappears and others pop up in other places .

One thing about a map it’s misleading the way it shows the layout that way, the city is massive and so are the properties you don’t pick that up on a map. I wonder where they get gas as gas stations were hard to find on the way back to the airport.

I’m betting I couldn’t have said it any better. This to a T. Add a bit of comped golf maybe.

Forget the taxis. They are outrageously high. Get an uber app, and you never have to wait over 10 minutes, and they're very reasonable.

I hung out mostly on the main Strip,,and down on Freemont Street. You can hop a bus on the Strip and they go from one end of the Strip to the other for a couple bucks. And they come through every 15 minutes or so.After you been there a couple times you get the layout of the land.

Yup,Covid is one reason I haven't been in a few years.I wasn't about to deal with all that crap.As far as maps,,I think they would have to make a new map every year. They are constantly tearing down a couple Hotels over here,,,and building a couple new ones over there.

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/22/24 06:40 PM

Was there last winter for the first time, didn’t gamble at all. Enjoyed the food and a few shows, couldn’t stand the crazy people and smell of weed everywhere.
Rented a car a drive out into the desert to explore and look for wildlife and was amazed how once you get 20 miles outside the city there is nobody. Kinda peaceful, walked a couple rough washes and was amazed at the amount of fur bearer sign, found a couple big cat toilets in one draw.

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/22/24 06:40 PM

For being about Covid they said but between the airports and casino gaming areas not a lot of cleaning going around from what I noticed. I always leave my chairs out so they know someone was on that machine but never seen much wiping down unless there was a obvious mess made. The cleaning crew during the day was minimal at best.

I went last year....not my thing...wondered about those mountains every morning as our view was awesome.

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/22/24 06:57 PM

been out there several tmes, my Daughter used to live out there, thank heavens she has moved away.

One thing that struck me was we stayed in one of the larger casino hotels once. We would get up early to do things out in the desert. We'd walk thru the casino on the way out at 5 am and there were still lots of people sitting at the slots going at it just like there was at 9 at night.
Talk about addicts.

On the plane I kept thinking how many bobcats we flew over on the trip.

You folks have to get off the Strip to find the real action.

Went to visit my sister last year.

Didn't trust Google maps, and ended up on MLK boulevard.

Won't be making that mistake again.

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/22/24 11:22 PM

I was in Los Vegas in August of 1980, when I was 10 years old. I remember a worker making my mother take my sleeping, 1 year old brother out of the area with the slots, while while she was just walking through, coming back from the bathroom, because it was illegal for children to be there. It was a short walk through and a very long walk around. My dad was speaking at a conference there. We stayed in Caesars Palace one night and moved to another hotel the next night, because my mom didn't like it. It was loud, crowded and all the workers had their hands out for tips at every door, bathroom and elevator.

I have no interest in going back to Vegas. I would not mind exploring the Mojave Desert.

I don't like gambling. Weirdly, in the dozen or so times I have played poker, I have always won the jackpot for the night. I almost always win all card games I play. Something about my brain makes me very good at cards. My paternal grandmother almost always won playing card games with her friends too.

Law dog I go to vegas each year for the NFR. I can tell you Uber is the only way to go out there, way cheaper than cabs and limos.

Had a connecting flight in Vegas on our way to an overseas flight. I can say I was in Vegas without having to drop a load of cash. cool

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/23/24 12:14 AM

Not ever being there before I expected to see less than I did when I got there for some reason, not sure why just the way I imagined it or the way it’s shown in the media. I guess I expected more properly but less buildings but it was buildings wall to wall in the area I was in not much real estate goes unused there.

Downtown was endless casino/industrial areas mixed with some businesses but nothing like most commercial areas in most cities, lacking convenient stores or mom and pop shops, strip malls anyplace I looked on the ride to the airport. I’m not sure where they could even buy gallon of milk or fill the gas tank from looking around.

That probably is in relation to property values as most business were service related that I observed. One big gun store had hummers parked all over and was a gun range. One large area was mostly men’s clubs a bunch of them for a few blocks.

I've been there at leaast a half dozen times for family trips and concerts. Haven't spent $20 gambling. I just grab a beer and watch the wildlife. We went to Garth Brooks at Caesar's Palace last year. Worth every dime.

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/23/24 05:43 AM

Been there twice 2003 for our honeymoon and 2006 with 4 friends. Didn't gamble a lot either time maybe $100 or so each time. Spent most of the time checking out the different themed casinos. I've suggested it a couple times in the last few years as a cheap quick getaway but my wife has checked prices and said the resort fees and other expenses make it not a real cheap vacation. I'd like to see the Hoover dam sometime is my biggest reason for wanting to go back. We travel a fair amount and she said other places have more to do, are cheaper and more our speed. She's probably right.

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/23/24 01:03 PM

Some places don’t charge the resort fees if you look around some, the next time I’ll hit the Park MGM if I ever go again and do the smoke free casino then.

Re: Vegas review first timer - 03/23/24 02:16 PM

Have to go in October, Son and fiance want to get married there, I'm only going cause it's my son, but it's going to cost me, besides the trips expense, I'm going to lose a week in my busiest time, probably north of $2,000. Thing is, it's always been a busy time and the whole family knows it, yet it's all about them, well her mostly....I'm going to try and make it look good, but I'm not happy.
I could care less about vegas and anything around it, as far as I'm concerned it's just an obligation... Thanks for hearing me rant, lol.

I got paid to be there because I worked for some of the top stock contractors.

Law Dog did you smell any skunk ? flavoured weed, just can't believe what they do to make something-desirable

Last time I was there was 45 years ago and the connecting flight was a lay-over so spent all my loose change in the slots in the off ramp of the airplane. Last 25 cents got a 300$ payout. Flight from LAX to Edmonton was 49$ then; so 40 days of birding was paid for. Anyone guess what 300$ of quarters weighs....sure wish I has saved them SILVER QUARTERS
