Photo Phriday 128 - Bobcats - 03/22/24 12:22 PM

Bobcats, where I trap, are not plentiful. I get a few every year in coyote snares. Too, when I'm wolf trapping in the summers to put on radio-collars, I get a few bobcats. For me, they are an added bonus on a mixed-species line.

This was a big, adult tom, waiting for me in a snare. Unlike most bobcats, I remember the meat from this guy was "musky" and not all that good to eat. Usually, in my opinion, they're delicious.

This one was unhurt in the MB750 wolf trap, and released. Sure had beautiful spotting.

Typical, north Idaho washed-out reddish bobcat.

I thought this a nice portrait of an Idaho bobcat.

Gulo The picture of e second one is a remarkable marked kitty On a smilar subject I once saw a bumper sticker that read Big cats can kill but a little cat never hurt anyone Well that is almost what it said ?? In the case of the one you have in the second picture I would certainly think that cat has killer spots

Let these two go at the end of January, matched set. Before they got to the cage they had killed and ate a cottontail.

I choked down this kitten to release it and then got my phone to take the pic after it had awaken. Within 3 seconds of taking this pic the little turd chased me back to my pick up!

Lazarus I would have a bit of a problem in your country at first, here in Pa I complain about the rocks but we have trees too. Your photos show a baren landscape to me. [Linked Image] And here is another to be released bobcat from Pa, caught in season but already used up my one and only tag.....jk

I have literally hundreds if not thousands of pictures of bobcats. Most of them of course aren't very good. Here are a couple treed with the hounds and then the last one is one I released out of a wolf trap. He stood around and posed for me after being released, in fact he wouldn't leave and let me reset the trap.

Re: Photo Phriday 128 - Bobcats - 03/23/24 02:53 PM

Bearcat, I learned years ago to drag them ten or fifteen feet away from the circle, when turning loose. They can waste a lot of valuable time, waiting for a stupid cat to leave the circle! They tend to own that spot where you caught them, and who is gonna argue with them! Had one that I dragged away, turned loose, and then he ran under my yota and growled at me. Never seen him leave, but started off slow, as I didn’t want to run over him after all that!

W151, Thanks, that was Savells cat . He kindly gave me permission to use his cat as a model for Blackie's Catalog cover. Those Texans catch some real nice ones.

Sharon, love your artwork! Especially love the settings and the backgrounds to all your work. Like that cat hugging tight to the rock wall. A lot of trappers could learn a very valuable lesson right there. A cat doesn’t need a lot of room to walk by a trap! As always, Many Thanks for sharing!

Morning, Tater. You noticed that behavior. Bob Noonan directed me to draw that cat just so, as a teaching aid to an article .
