Something’s got to kill me, might as well be morel mushrooms.

I used to eat tons of morel's when I was younger and absolutely love them. Probably 10-15 years ago I started getting sick when I eat them. The first few times it was just stomach cramps and just got progressively worse. I have heard that it is possible to develop an allergy to them as you get older. Mom's Morel soup was to die for too.

according to the article "It was determined that the morels consumed in Montana were shipped in from overseas and not prepared correctly."
I have seen this info other places, the mushrooms came from where else but China.
Anyone with half a brain avoids anything and everything from China.

Growing up morels catfish and ramps in the same meal.
I've been deathly allergic to morels for maybe 30 years. And fish for 20 or so

I wish I could find enough to eat myself to death!! grin

I have never gotten sick from eating them. I think partly as I’ve never been lucky enough to find them in sufficient quantities.

Re: Morel mushroom warning? - 03/20/24 11:56 AM

I remember one morning back in the early 80’s, my dad and I were turkey hunting in the river hills of the Gasconade River. We sat down to call to an old gobbler and once we did and looked around, as far as you could see were BIG yellow morels. We had to chase the gobbler around for a while before we finally lost it. We spent the rest of the morning looking for that patch and never found it back. Dad said that was God’s way of testing us to force us to make a decision. We choose Gluttony, wanted both the turkey and morels. We choose wrong.

I've heard a good place to look for them is around dying elm trees. I've got quite a few dying elms, but have never found any around them.

Here in PA we find them mostly near waterways hiding under bushes & blowdowns. They really sprout up good after rains

pick local , clean well , cook through

the article is a little miss leading talking about mushroom hunters and local season then gets to the problem mushrooms were imported from overseas and not prepared properly used raw in salads.

we cut all of them in half length wise , this will help tell you the false morels as they are not hollow. it also helps you clean the dirt and insects out of them.

soak in salted cold water further drives the little bugs out

cook through

I've picked morels for 50 years. Literally hundreds of pounds. I think I'll continue to risk it.

as long as your not picking them in china you will probably be just fine.

Re: Morel mushroom warning? - 03/20/24 09:44 PM

I seriousy doubt they were unsafe when they were grown/picked either. It was the trip, and then being eaten raw that was the problem. It also says nothing about coming from China, that was made up.

It says nothing about coming from China. It says they were shipped from over seas. It doesn’t even matter where they come from, they need to be cooked regardless.

Re: Morel mushroom warning? - 03/21/24 01:08 PM

I’m guessing you could eat fresh morels raw. If you stack them on top of each other in containers and allow mold to grow, you’re going to have a problem if you eat them raw.

The inability to preserve fresh morels for long periods of time is what makes them so popular when in season.imo.
