Replacing valve stem on tractor

My tractors back tires were low and I could only air one of them up. The stem part is not right on the other one. These are filled with washer fluid. Is this something easy to fix myself or will I need to hall it to tire shop orr have them come and fix it at the farm?

That depends on what is messed up with the stem. If it's just the schrader valve you can get a tool to remove it and get a replacement. I'd make sure the valve stem was up so the fluid doesn't drain out. If it's the rubber stem itself, you have to break the bead of the tire and remove the stem from the inside, which is more of a pain to do yourself, though not impossible. Sometimes when tire pressure gets too low, the stem can be pushed inwards making it hard to get an air chuck on it, that's usually a tube issue and I doubt you're running fluid with tubed tires. Hard to tell what is going on. Can you elaborate on the "stem part" not being right?

Can you jack it up to take the weight off?

What valve do you have on that wheel ? there are couple of types and some you can replace without taking the tire of the rim and others you cant.

If you can fir one of those, all you need to do it turn the wheel so the valve it at the top, jacke the tractor up, take the pressure off, cut the old valve stem off ( its just rubber ) and replace it with one of the above.... screw it down tight, fill up with air and done.

I couldn't remember the term but the piece that pushes down and let's air In was not correct. It looks thinner than the other side and and seems bent moving around not just mining up and down and not letting air in.
I can't remember if the back tires have tubs but I think they do. I know the front tires do.


Reading my post here I can't help but be reminded of how I feel when my wife or daughter is trying to describe a car problem to me. Ha ha. Yes I'm doing a very poor job explaining.

First try removing the schrader valve, the up and down thingee. It screws right out with a few dollar tool, replace with new valve, shouldn't cost much at all.

Valve at top of tire, tire jacked up to reduce the pressure. 2 minute job if your slow...

You can buy the valve cores at pretty much any place. Just make sure its the right size. My tractor tires on the rear have larger valves than the front tires to make it easier to add liquid. Som sub compact tractors use the normal car tire valve size all the way around.

Some tools to look for if you are doing a tire valve repair.

On the right is a Schrader valve tool. Combination valve remover, outer thread chase (die) , inner thread chase (tap) and broken valve extractor.
Bottom of pic , valve stem installation tool.
Both fairly cheap. Both can be bypassed by using a very slim slotted screwdriver carefully on one side of the Schrader valve if it is not too tight to get the valve core out or in , install the new valve stem by very carefully pulling it through with pliers , trying to avoid damaging the rubber.

You might be able to get both for about $10. Harbor Freight quality is fine , don't need anything fancy.

Remember when the valve cover used to be a core remover tool.
Most tire shops had one screwed onto a valve stem.

I guess I’ve never heard of using washer fluid for weight the nice part of that you wouldn’t ruin the rims.

Calcium Chloride is what they used to use.
Did they change it?

I have a few. Some mounted on valve stems , some mounted on bolts.

Also have a small stash of those old valve covers/core remover caps.

That or beet juice is used here but he said in the first post that they had washer fluid in them.

Yes, at least around here. Keeps your rims from rotting out. The tires were flaking apart when I got it. I called the big tire shop 35 min from my other house I used to live at to price them. I planed on takin the tractor to them they came out and put new tires on it in my drive way and only charged me $75 extra to do so. I was going to have to drive 20 min each way to pick up the trailer to use 35 min to the shop an d35 min back then the 20 each way to take the trailer back. Plus loading and unloading it twice. I thought $75 was a bargain. Bet it's higher now.

I don't even know what it if a shop by the farm offers that or.the price
